Interesting review. I actually checked this out of the library last month, read only one chapter and took it back. I don't know if I hated it or just wasn't feeling it at that moment. I know so many people loved it.

Amy wrote: "I actually think you would love this Rachel. A lot of people really did, some people just liked it and just a few did not. But I have a feeling it might appeal to you Rachel. I gave it five stars."
I should give it another try. I only read the first chapter and I just wasn't feeling it and I'm not sure why. I think a lot of stuff going on in my life so reading wasn't all that easy anyway.

This book covers the story of a multi-generation dysfunctional family, and it meanders all over with many characters and back and forth in time.
There are a large number of ancillary characters - the author digs deeply into each of those characters, but most of them have no real impact or contribution to the story. For me, some of these ancillary characters are the most likeable in the book, so it was doubly disappointing when their stories hit dead ends.
The author wrote this book over a number of years, and apparently changed his focal point over that period of time. And it shows.
This book needed an editor with a pair of scissors, and possibly a full rewrite. It barely holds together, I didn't like the main characters, and the last third of the book is a lecturing/scolding "moral of the story". I seriously don't need a "we all learned something here today" ending.
Sorry to be so negative!
