!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....Boo!....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tasks

1. TORTURE MUSEUM, NETHERLANDS
Commercial Photography
The city of Amsterdam boasts over 50 museums, but few of them are as strange as the Museum of Torture. It provides a vivid image of a painful European past. The exhibit “Punishments and Verdicts in the Middle Ages” includes over forty instruments of punishment from different parts of Europe, from the inquisition chair to the guillotine.

◆ Read a book where a form of torture was used OR
◆ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL FICTION on its GR homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in TORTURE MUSEUM (3 word minimum - all words count).

2. SEDLEC OSSUARY, CZECH REPUBLIC
Commercial Photography
This small chapel is known worldwide for its macabre décor of carved human bones and skeletons. It all started in the early 1300's, when the abbot scattered holy soil from Jerusalem in the cemetery, making it a popular burial site. Running out of space they began digging up old graves to make room for others. A local woodcarver was given the daunting task of arranging more 40,000 old bones in a visually impressive way.

◆ Read a book with a cemetery or bones of any kind on the cover OR
◆ Read a book with more than 40,000 RATINGS on its GR homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in SEDLEC OSSUARY (3 word minimum - all words count).

3. PARK OF THE MONSTERS, ITALY
Commercial Photography
Commissioned in 1552 by Prince Orsini as an expression of grief for his wife, this garden in Lazio is not like any other classic Renaissance garden. It was designed to display his deep despair. The park is filled with a collection of strange and unusual sculptures hiding among the landscape. Gaze upon giants, winged horses, fiery dragons and perhaps the most frightening, an enormous ogre head, mouth opened wide in a chilling scream.

◆ Read a book where a MC is grieving the loss of a loved one OR
◆ Read a book tagged FANTASY on its GR Homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in PARK OF THE MONSTERS (3 word minimum - all words count).

4. VOODOO MUSEUM, NEW ORLEANS
Commercial Photography
This unusual museum offers a glimpse into New Orleans’ mystical, occult underworld, offering psychic or tarot card readings and fortune telling. Replete with altars, shrines, and voodoo dolls, a visit to this quirky little museum is sure to leave you worrying whether you’ve inadvertently offended any secret voodoo practitioners. And don't miss their informative tour of the nearby haunted St. Louis cemetery - it's a fascinating and spooky place.

◆ Read a book by an author with a double OO in their first or last name OR
◆ Read a book tagged PARANORMAL on its GR Homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in VOODOO MUSEUM (3 word minimum - all words count).

5. ISLAND OF THE DOLLS, MEXICO
Commercial Photography
Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimico you can find a small island known as the Island of the Dolls. The site is dedicated to the lost soul of a poor girl who under strange circumstances met her fate too soon. It is now famous for the hundreds of dolls - and doll parts - hanging from trees and scattered among the grass. It is the perfect location for a horror movie set – definitely scary!

◆ Read a book with a doll on the cover OR
◆ Read a book tagged HORROR on its GR Homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in ISLAND OF THE DOLLS (3 word minimum - all words count).

6. MACHINES OF THE ISLE, FRANCE
Commercial Photography
This fantastical park in Nantes is definitely unusual! Created by two mechanical artists hoping to share their creative process with the public. Their collective imagination brings to life the world of Jules Verne, the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci, and Nantes’ industrial history. Take a ride on the 4-story mechanical Grand Elephant, the Marine World Carousel and visit the workshop to see other amazing mechanical creatures. This is a one of a kind experience!

◆ Read a book with a character who is an inventor or is mechanical (tell us who) OR
◆ Read a book tagged STEAMPUNK on its GR Homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in MACHINES OF THE ISLE (3 word minimum - all words count).

7. KENMORE INSANE ASYLUM, AUSTRALIA
Commercial Photography
Insane asylums in general create a significant creep factor, but this one has a history of awful deaths including a famous murder. It is now completely abandoned with 77 empty buildings and the Goulburn locals claim the spirits of those who died there roam the empty halls. Ghost tours of the asylum are conducted regularly. And if you want more ghostly encounters, head on over to the town's abandoned orphanage.

◆ Read a book that has a ghost in the story OR
◆ Read a book tagged FOLKLORE on its GR homepage OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in KENMORE INSANE ASYLUM (3 word minimum - all words count).

8. ODESSA CATACOMBS, UKRAINE
Commercial Photography
Beneath the streets of Odessa lies an underground city of uncharted mazes and tunnels that twist and turn for more than 1,500 miles making it the longest underground passage in the world. Originally started in the 17th century it was drastically expanded in the 19th century to quarry limestone used to build the city. With a history of smugglers, criminals and patriots the discoveries found tell an interesting history of the area. Though never used for graves, mummified remains are discovered every few years. It is definitely an "enter at your own risk" adventure.

◆ Read a book that has an underground scene in it OR
◆ Read a book with 1,500 or more REVIEWS on its GR Homepage < OR
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in ODESSA CATACOMBS

Tasks

1. TORTURE MUSEUM, NETHERLANDS

2. SEDLEC OSSUARY, CZECH REPUBLIC

3. PARK OF THE MONSTERS, ITALY

4. VOODOO MUSEUM, NEW ORLEANS

5. ISLAND OF THE DOLLS, MEXICO

6. MACHINES OF THE ISLE, FRANCE

7. KENMORE INSANE ASYLUM, AUSTRALIA

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 349 comments Jen,
I have two questions:

2. SEDLEC OSSUARY, CZECH REPUBLIC
◆ Read a book with a cemetery or bones of any kind on the cover - Would this cover A Deadly Blessing (LAPD Detective Maddie Divine #1) by Kathy Bennett work?

6. MACHINES OF THE ISLE, FRANCE
◆ Read a book with a character who is an inventor or is mechanical (tell us who) - Did you mean mechanic or mechanical artist instead of mechanical? If you meant mechanical - had you a machine/robot character in mind?

message 24: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 20729 comments Welcome to the challenge Agnieszka!

Yes that cover would work! In regards to the "mechanical" I had in mind someone who works with machines in some way. But I would take a mechanical machine-like character too!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 349 comments I have another question :-)
Read a book tagged ... on its GR Homepage - do you mean the main page genre (MPG) or the tags hidden behind the See top shelves… link as well?

For example: Since the vision and the psychic helping solve the crime have such a prominent role in Tanz mit dem Tod=Visions in Death it's even part of the original title (and it's tagged paranormal (PN) though on the second page only :-( - but not MPG) I would regard this book PN could I use it for the task '...a book tagged PARANORMAL..'?

message 40: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 20729 comments Hi Agnieszka! Sorry for the late response.

Unfortunately, I really want the tag to be on the MPG. I understand your frustration - sometimes those MPG tags do not cover the obvious. But on the other hand, when you go to top shelves you can find just about anything there. So I'm sticking to the MPG.

Creepy, Strange & Unusual
October 1, 2018 - November 30, 2018

8
of 8 Complete

Tasks

1. TORTURE MUSEUM, NETHERLANDS
◆ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL FICTION on its GR homepage
The Tenderness of Wolves - Stef Penney - 10/8/18

2. SEDLEC OSSUARY, CZECH REPUBLIC
◆ Read a book with more than 40,000 RATINGS on its GR homepage
Into the Water - Paula Hawkins - 10/16/18 - 164,823 ratings

3. PARK OF THE MONSTERS, ITALY
◆ Read a book tagged FANTASY on its GR Homepage
The Last Dragonslayer - Jasper Fforde - 10/6/18

4. VOODOO MUSEUM, NEW ORLEANS
◆ Read a book by an author with a double OO in their first or last name words count).
The Janissary Tree - Jason Goodwin - 10/9/18

5. ISLAND OF THE DOLLS, MEXICO
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in ISLAND OF THE DOLLS (3 word minimum - all words count).
Death on Tour - Janice Hamrick - 10/5/18 - DOT

6. MACHINES OF THE ISLE, FRANCE
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in MACHINES OF THE ISLE (3 word minimum - all words count).
The Salt Line - Holly Goddard Jones - 10/28/18 - TSL

7. KENMORE INSANE ASYLUM, AUSTRALIA
◆ Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in KENMORE INSANE ASYLUM (3 word minimum - all words count).
A Merciful Silence -Kendra Elliot - 10/13/18 - AMS

8. ODESSA CATACOMBS, UKRAINE
◆ Read a book with 1,500 or more REVIEWS on its GR Homepage
The Red Tent - Anita Diamant - 10/22/18 - 18,063 Reviews
