I’m reading the second one now, and I like it, but I do have to skim the excessive descriptions. And there are too many of them. Martin’s a touch disturbed, I think.

Haha no this is definitely not a warm fuzzy everyone is friends sort of series.
If I read the next one I'll probably start skimming the unnecessary parts. It's a good idea.
And I have been drawn in and do care what happens to the characters (or at least some of them) and I hope that their arcs will continue in the same promising direction. There are some elements that I would give close to five stars and others I wouldn't hesitate to give one. I'm still really enjoying the court intrigue and finding out more about the world especially what's beyond the wall.
But there are other things I'm getting really sick of. What is the most tiring for me about GoT is the constant murdering and raping that most of the time has almost nothing to do with the story yet Martin insists on going into great detail about. Why? Is it just to show how terrible humanity can be? I mean I know this is supposed to be dark fantasy but I think he gets way to into it sometimes.
Anyway, I'm still probably going to read the next one so prepare for more slightly annoyed reviews. I doubt I'm going to like the next ones more we'll see about less.
