Hello, friends! Happy October! We'll use this forum to discuss Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. I can't wait to hear what you all think of the book, and to see if any of you can figure out the mystery before the ending! Happy reading!

Hi, Bookshelfers! I haven't finished with the book yet, but I am curious what you all thought Aven would find behind the door marked DO NOT ENTER.

I think I was expecting an abandoned haunted house or the behind-the-scenes side of an old ride that used to be at Stagecoach Pass. Since there were so many DO NOT ENTER signs, it seemed like something the amusement park would put up for safety.

Kennedy Lee | 40 comments SPOILER ALERT!

Well... I didn't really think about that! But I guess I thought that it was a secret room to hide something? I might be taking that from the result, though. I thought it was really cool how Aven stayed optimistic and eventually found the courage to eat in the cafeteria at the end of the book. I felt like she was a good problem solver, optimistic in tough circumstances, and good at deduction. What did you think of Josephine's choice? I think that she should have taken care of Aven, but then again, she wouldn't have her loving parents. And what did you think of her play? I thought it was a little goofy, but I liked it. I like how she stayed true to herself (mostly), even when it was hard for her to make friends. Oh, and happy Halloween in 23 days!

Kennedy Lee | 40 comments Hey Molly, have you read the books that are picked before?

Emilio | 17 comments Hello fellow bookworms! I really liked insignifigant events in the life of a cactus and I thought it was crazy that that diner lady was her grandma. It was a very good perspective of an armless person and I liked how Conner didn't really care about Aven's armlessness.

Emilio | 17 comments Hi Tyler,
It does seem like there would be something like that behind one of those doors but It was crazy what she found in the end. I won't tell you and spoil it because I want you to read that.

Hey Kennedy! Good question! I work for the Bee and am in charge of selecting the books for the Bookshelf each month, so yes, I do read the books before they're announced. I'm always interested to hear if you guys like the books I choose, and I'd love to hear your suggestions on what we should read next.

Hey Emilio! I'm so glad you liked this month's book. I also really enjoyed reading about life from the perspective of an armless person, and I love books that include a good mystery.

In the recommendations section, I will probably add books a lot because I love to read, so I always have new books.

Thanks for not including any spoilers, Emilio! I was very surprised by what she found behind the door and then even more surprised by what it meant at the end of the book. I did not see the ending coming until right at the last moment, which I think is what makes a mystery so great!

Good hearing from you, Emilio

What mysteries do you like? I read a lot of them myself.

When I was younger, I loved reading Nancy Drew mysteries! I also really like everything by Trenton Lee Stewart—his mysteries have a lot of puzzles, and I like to try and solve those along with the characters.

The Lady Grace Mysteries, any book by Jonathan Auxier, Curiosity House by Lauren Oliver, Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliet, plus, I've read one of the Hardy Boys books, which are like Nancy Drew.

Kennedy Lee | 40 comments This is the bee's bookshelf, so I'm just wondering... Who has competed/is competing in the actual bees?

I love Lauren Oliver, but I haven't read Curiosity House yet. I'm going to need to add it to my to-read list!

That's a great question, Kennedy! Do we have anyone here who's competed in a spelling bee before?
