Rules

About this Challenge
◈ Starts on October 27th, 2018 and runs for 6 weeks
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the 6 weeks wins!
◈ Each week the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the word to gain points by number of pages read (check point system below)
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more points (according to the point system below).
◈ The team must read books to complete a read through of their word before they can get points for completing subsequent read throughs (i.e. if you only complete one book in the second read through and three in the third, you don't get points for the those 3 books in the third).
Example:
BONES BONES BO --> Gets points for all letters
BONES BON BO --> Only BONES + BON get points
◈ Books must be more than 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scriptplays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com) as more than 40,000 words
◈Only books read during the specified week can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous weeks to use later in the challenge

Point System
◈ Books between 160 and 200 pages = 5 points
◈ Books between 201 pages and 300 pages = 10 points
◈ Books between 301 and 400 pages = 20 points
◈ Books between 401 and 500 pages = 40 points
◈ Books between 501 and 650 pages = 60 points
◈ Books between 651 and 800 pages = 80 points
◈ Books over 801 pages = 100 points

Additional Points
◈ The team will get additional bonus points for "collecting" their word in the categories below(*):
- Word in text --> 20 points
- Word in title/series name --> 30 points
- Word on the cover --> 40 points
- Word as genre --> 50 points
(*)Note 1: Collecting the word can be done once per category.
Note 2: If the word is a colour, the category "Word on the cover" means reading a book with that cover colour (cover must be about 50% of that colour)
Note 3: Books need to be part of the spell-it-out to be used for points

◈ BOM bonus:
- Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
- Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
Note 1: We will accept one team member per book per team for writing a days DQs. If, by three days prior to the BOM starting, we don't have enough volunteers to write all DQs, then we will let more than one team member per team write questions. If we have more people than days sign up (prior to 3 days before start date) we will randomise the volunteers to determine those who can write DQs
Note 2: Books need to be part of the spell-it-out to be used for points

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Hi all and welcome to Team Igor,

My name is Nikk and I am your captain for the next 6 or so weeks of this challenge :-)

I live in Sydney, Australia with my husband and 6 year old daughter, 2 cats and 1 dog.

I am very much a mood reader, reading mostly fantasy, both high fantasy and urban fantasy and paranormal/ paranormal romance but I also read mysteries, of both the cozy and thriller variety, YA, romance (contemporary and historical) as the mood takes me I tend to stay away from non-fiction and don’t read a heap of horror or science fiction but I will if a challenge requires it.

Some quick intro questions for you as you check in:

Where are you from?
What do you read? And not read?
What book are you most looking forward to reading before the end of the year ?

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments Hi, everyone!

I'm GreenFairy (GF or Amy are also common). I'm in New York. I have a 16 year old daughter that I talk about a lot. When I'm not around here, I'm usually doing something for or with her.

I work from home so I'm in and out a lot.

I will read anything that is needed for a challenge. I try to not read chick-lit or contemporary romance. I haven't been able to get into sci-fi or fantasy yet but I keep trying. I lean toward paranormal, urban fantasy, thriller, horror, romance and/or erotica mixed in.

I'm hoping to get back into reading James Patterson again. Last night, I had the opportunity to go to a book signing at a not-quite local bookstore that was a part of his bookstore. I got to meet James Patterson!

Krissy (krissystewart) | 316 comments Hi, team!

Hi, GF! We seem to be stuck together often lately :)

My name is Krissy. I'm a SAHM with 3 kids. Ages 15, 8, and 6(turns 7 this month). We are currently stationed in Texas.

I read just about any and every genre. But I do try to stay away from anything overtly political or religious. 90% of my reading is done with audiobooks. I'm addicted and can't get enough.

The books I am looking forward to most are the buddy reads with my oldest daughter. I love reading books with her. So we have a large TBR pile, I'm looking forward to getting that pile down a bit.

message 18: by GreenFairy (new)

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments Hi, Krissy! Yeah, we do seem to be put on a lot of teams together LOL

Welcome to the team! Hopefully others will get checked in soon.

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Krissy - does SAHM stand for single asian heterosexual male? That is all I can come up with.

I am Sarah and live in Portland, Oregon. I read literary fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction, memoirs and biographies, political books, spiritual books, horror, thriller/mysteries, mostly. I don't read romance or paranormal romance or urban fantasy. I also read a lot to my eight year old daughter and will be using those books as well. I pretty much know what books I will be reading for the rest of the year. I have some W's lined up for the first week if need.

message 20: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments I have a question - for bonus points I don't understand what it is looking for for the genre category.

message 21: by Sarah (last edited Oct 10, 2018 08:18AM) (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments I am looking forward to reading Stones from the River (Burgdorf Cycle, #1) by Ursula Hegi - the main protagonist is a little person and I think it is set in around WWII in Nazi Germany. Another WWII book I want to read is The Orphan's Tale by Pam Jenoff .

Some new releases I am looking forward to is A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza , Lethal White (Cormoran Strike, #4) by Robert Galbraith , and Us Against You (Beartown, #2) by Fredrik Backman

My audiobook I will be looking forward to is Barracoon The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" by Zora Neale Hurston

message 22: by GreenFairy (new)

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments For the genre... When you look at a book's page, on the right side there is a short list of genres. In most cases, right under that is a link that says "see top shelves" When you click on that, it gives you a page (a lot of times there are multiple pages) that has a list of shelves that the book has been shelved on. If it's listed on that first page (what you're looking for), then it fits.

SAHM-stay at home mom

message 23: by GreenFairy (new)

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments I did a quick glance at the books I have available to read... I can cover all letters-twice LOL

If I understand correctly, and I'm sure Nikk will either confirm or correct, the first read through of the letters gets no additional points other than reading the word. No bonus, I mean. But from the second on, bonus applies.

I have a short list set up for first read through.

I am a single mom too, but I have one child only, but it is perfect for me. I take her with me on all my travels.

So I still don't get the genre thing and how it relates to the books we read for the challenge or how we get bonus points for it. I need an example.

message 25: by Krissy (new)

Krissy (krissystewart) | 316 comments SAHM just means stay at home mom. I'm not single or anything.

Example of the genre thing. (And this is only if plurals are allowed. So correct me if am wrong!)

... our first word is werewolf. Look at Shiver. Under "genres" you will see shapeshifters>werewolves. Obviously not every word will be a genre so won't be able to get that specific bonus point every time.

message 26: by Karolyn (last edited Oct 10, 2018 09:49AM) (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Hello everyone! I'm really excited for this challenge. I live in Missouri in the middle of the USA with my husband and three cats. We also have two high school foreign exchange students living with us (from Spain and Thailand). I mostly read non-fiction, historical fiction, and mysteries. But will read just about anything to score challenge points!

Right now I'm reading War and Peace, and am looking forward to finally getting it off my TRB list this year. Since we have 2 W's in our first word... I'm targeting finishing it during Week 1 of this challenge so we can get some big points!

Chris (cdavies1951) | 2192 comments Hi All!

I'm Chris, living in Wichita KS. I'm retired and love to read Historical Mysteries, Crime, Romance or just about anything with a good plot or exciting characters.

I have a new puppy, (Boston Terrorist), who is keeping me hopping and interfering with my reading time. I will manage or she'll do some crate time.

I like to write, and am currently working on the great American novel, or maybe just a romantic suspense. I'm hoping to finish the first draft by the end of the year.

Had a good laugh at the SAHM comments... Loved "Lethal White" - it was worth the wait. "War and Peace," too.

I have an "F" book that I can read the 1st week, or plenty of W's or L's . I can search for an "E" if necessary.

Looking forward to a great team!

Sarah | 3273 comments So that is another question - when can we start reading our books for the challenge?

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Hi all and welcome , apologies I haven’t chatted much yet. It’s school holidays here and the last couple of days I have had my daughter riding the 2 hour train ride with me to and from work which is the time I often use to catch up on goodreads.

I will be back on later today with some more information and to answer all questions.

Sarah, there is a count down to start of challenge in msg 4 along important links including the link to our planning sheet.

If you all want to click and request access to the planning sheet and I will explain more later today

message 34: by GreenFairy (new)

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments One of the things I did with planning what I want to read for the first week, I marked down what the bonus points (for second read through) would be for each one. So the first book will have the lowest points that would have applied.

If I did nothing but read (no eating, no sleeping, no work, no daughter time) I would be able to read the word twice on my own.

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Well I understand there is a countdown to start the challenge I didn't really feel my question was answered. When can we start reading for the challenge? Do we have to wait until the challenge starts... or just have a book finished during the challenge???

Because from what I seem to understand is it is just going by date finished, which means I could start reading some books now... so if I am wrong it would be nice to have that clarified. My god that was a lot of typing. Whew!

message 36: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments The national book award finalists for this year have been released - now I have that many more books to add to my tbr pile. I usually read the Man Booker, National Book Awards and Pulitzer winners every year. I try to keep up.

From Clarifications with the Mods:

All books must be started after the challenge begins.

The read date determines what week you must use it.

You can’t read (finish) a book in week one, and choose to not use it that week and use it the second week instead. (Or subsequent weeks)

You can start a book in week one, finish in week two; and use in week two. (But you can only use it then in week two)

By-the-by, we only get word completion bonus for the first completion

(Hi Nikk! sorry for jumping in on your team like this, just being nosey & that..., and this is a point I asked the mods about)

I'm reading it for another challenge, but was hoping to score some serious points here too. I'm enjoying it. There are a lot of characters and subplots to keep track of, but it's a great book.

My favorite thing about these challenges is they force me out of my comfort zone. I've been avoiding War Andy Peace for ten years... all the sudden need to read the longest book on my TBR list for a challenge and I'm all... "Yep, bring it on" I haven't read Crime and Punishment yet... but want to someday.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments HI all,

Sorry school holiday madness have made thigs a little crazy this week but all goes back to normal from this weekend.

Yes we can't start reading books for the challenge till the challenge actually starts. The mods have posted a guide showing the start time for a whole heap of time zones which I will post above shortly.

In regards to the werewolf/werewolves question, i feel like there has been some discussion around just this thing in the captains Q & A so I will check and get back to you

Same thing with the BOM questions around points and participating. I will double check and get back to you :-)

For now I really need to get ready to leave for work else I will miss the train

Sarah | 3273 comments Oh no. Guess what? I have another question. Sorry for all the questions. Soooo, I was wondering how I can check for page/word counts on some children's books. I read a lot to my daughter, chapter books, but some have a lot of illustrations and stuff. But I would like to see if I can use some of them for the challenge?

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments October BOM won't count for because the end of the last read is 10/22 and the challenge doesn't start until 10/27.

Also, plurals are acceptable. No other variations (such as hyphenation) are. Base word (werewolf) or plural (werewolves) only.

message 50: by GreenFairy (new)

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 141 comments Who knows what they are planning to read for the first read through of werewolf? I'm trying to set up a tracker for it so letters don't get missed.
