Aetherial Worlds: Stories by Tatyana Tolstaya, Translated by Anya Migdal

This one was my first read of the list and has been growing on me.
My favorite story was printed in The New Yorker.

The collection is far more varied than the short examples I listed above. In a pair of longer pieces, "The Invisible Maiden," and the title story "Aetherial Worlds," Tolstaya shifts to memoir with a nostalgic childhood description of the family dacha in the former, and a darkly satirical telling of the buying and maintaining of a house in the USA in the latter.
