Julia Cieslak | 9 comments I’m slugging through invincible Louise. Almost done but man alive is it hard!! I feel like i’ve been reading this book for forever!

message 2: by Kris (new)

Kris | 3 comments I just finished Sounder and Bud, Not Buddy. Sounder was a pleasant surprise but so somber and heavy I felt like I needed to read curious george after too lift the mood!

Julia Cieslak | 9 comments So i also found the second worst Newberry: out of the dust. So incredibly depressing and horrifying that it could be the only children’s book rated R

message 4: by Kris (new)

Kris | 3 comments I can absolutely believe that Julia! Ive been holding off on Invincible Louisa after a slew of tough books (The Bronze Bow, Shiloh, and Sounder). I'll knex to choose carefully for the next one so as not to become totally depressed with this project!

message 5: by Megan (new)

Megan C. | 1 comments Agreed about Out of the Dust! What an awful story. I will not recommend that book to anyone!

message 6: by Julia (new)

Julia Cieslak | 9 comments just finished Daniel Boone. not as much of a slog as invincible Louisa, mostly because it is blessedly short. makes me want to read more about Daniel Boone, who was a prominent figure before/during/after the Revolutionary war. and yes, this book is racist. but i tried to see the purpose of the book and read it in the context of being written during the great depression.

Julia Cieslak | 9 comments out of the dust: who thought that book was safe for kids? it made me want to die.

message 8: by Julia (new)

Julia Cieslak | 9 comments bronze bow actually wasn't bad. i did audiobook for all three of those, Kris, and found it much easier.

message 9: by Kris (new)

Kris | 3 comments I don't do audiobooks. I listen for a living and the last thing I want is to listen to someone else telling ne stories on my down time! Haven't read Out of the Dust yet. Roll of Thunder was the last superb winner I read.
