What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Alright so, found an old book report where I went wildly off topic since I hated the book so much. Google search of the characters' names brings up news articles, so that's out.
I read it in 6th grade in 2002.
There are characters named Ham Knapp and Michael Frolich, and apparently educated me on sea turtles... It also had, according to the report "not enough bad guys, action, science, or aliens."
Please help me find the book 11 y/o me hated so much I instead wrote a report on how much better books with aliens were!
