Did you pair up the rejects before or after you chose the books for each set of prompts? I want to know your process! (Can delete later if you need!)

My 2019 Reading Plan included a list of books I definitely wanted to read and a list of books I maybe wanted to read.
As we went through the suggesting/voting process I would select a few books from one of the lists that would fit a potential prompt. If the prompt didn't make the official list I'd move it to the reject list.
After a few weeks there was a pattern: a prompt would be rejected, I'd move the book to the reject list, that book would potentially fit a new prompt suggestion, I'd move the book to the maybe list, that prompt would be rejected, and the book would be back on the reject list. And that is when I decided to do the double reject challenge...because one book now had two rejected prompts that fit.
Not all books fit the pattern though so I had a few that only had one rejected prompt associated with it. For those books, I had to find a second rejected prompt, and it was usually something extraordinarily broad like "a book written by a woman" or "a book with an epigraph."

My one 5 Star book was The Fair Fight by Anna Freeman. I read this for my rejects challenge for the topics “A book recommended by a favourite author” (Sarah Waters) and “A book about or inspired by a real heroine of yours” (unconventional women).
Other books I really liked and rated 4 Stars were:
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell
Week 5 - “A book inspired by Shakespeare” (Lennox is a character in Macbeth)
Did You Ever Have a Family by Bill Clegg
Week 16 - “A book told from multiple perspectives”
When the Moon Is Low by Nadia Hashimi
Week 2 - “A book with one of the 5 Ws in the title”
The Tiger's Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera
Rejects challenge - “A book with a family member in the title” and “A book with an LGBTQ+ character or author”
Sugar Run by Mesha Maren
Week 4 - “A book with a criminal character”
Hope everyone has had a splendid month of reading and are making great progress in their challenge(s)!

I..."
Wow! 11 books - I could never read that many in a month. Just making it to the goal of 52 books I decided on will be a big challenge! I read 4 in January, so at least I am keeping up (so far). Great job!
I am going to check out one of the books you mentioned - WHEN THE MOON IS LOW. "Moon" is one of my "title trigger words" - a word or phrase in a title that will immediately trigger my attention, get me to at least read something about it to see if it's a book I might like. Some others are "witch," "goddess," "Magdalen(e)," "Paris," food-related terms, "Guadalupe," "Holy Grail," names of historical figures or events I am interested in, art-related (especially artists) words, & those are just a few.
I will be listing my January books here & what Challenge categories I assigned to them. But first must log the book I finished reading this morning. And write a short review. That takes time too.

My favorite book of the month, which I rated 4 Stars, was My Real Children by Jo Walton. I used this for Week 6 A book with a dual timeline. I also really enjoyed Days Without End by Sebastian Barry, which I read for my rejects challenge (A book from the Costa Awards and A book about an unlikely friendship).
Hope everyone is having fun with the ATY challenge. Happy reading!
(And apologies to Marilyn that I totally missed your comment. Guess I need to turn on notifications.)

My favorite book of the month, which I rated 5 Stars, was Everything Under by Daisy Johnson, which I used for Week 13 A book that is included on a New York Public Library Staff Picks list.
Another 5 Star read in March was Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan, which I read for my rejects challenge (A book with a drink in the title and A book you meant to read in 2018). I also really liked Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, which I rated 4 Stars. This was also for my rejects challenge (A book from The Millions' Most Anticipated lists and A book with a title that contains an allusion to another literary work).
I hope everyone else is doing well with their ATY Challenge. Happy reading!

Rachelnyc wrote: "I loved Manhattan Beach and am looking forward to finally reading Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad this year."
I read A Visit from the Goon Squad last year and really, really enjoyed it! More than I expected. The Powerpoint chapter just really made me happy.

Excellent update, Dalex. I might actually take that Everything Under pick for my own Library Staff Pick. I seem to recall not being smitten with my choice on that one. I also like your cocktail book. I picked a Manhattan book, too! Happy reading. I love finding out what everyone enjoys. My TBR list just keeps growing.

Just by the by, my daughter sent me a picture of her at Manhattan Beach near Los Angeles yesterday... beautiful sunny day!

I read A Visit from the Goon Squad several years ago and didn't really like it. For this reason I was a hesitant to read Manhattan Beach but it's vastly different, so much so that it's actually surprising it's by the same author. I hope you enjoy A Visit from the Goon Squad more than I did!

Emily wrote: "I went with Everything Under for my multiple perspective book! Thanks for the rec, dalex! "
I hope you both love it as much as I did! I was so mesmerized that I almost finished it in one sitting.

Yes, it absolutely does. It's told from the perspectives of Anna, her father, and a man named Dexter Styles (who has interesting connections to both Anna and her father). Happy reading!

My favorite book of the month, which I rated 5 Stars, was The Gods of Tango by Carolina De Robertis. I read this for my rejects challenge (“A book with a theme of gender or gender issues” and “A book in which a character uses a disguise”).
Another 5 Star book was Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield, which I used for Week 17 “A speculative fiction.”
I hope everyone else is doing well with their ATY Challenge. Happy reading!

My favorite book of the month, which I rated 5 Stars, wasSwimming Lessons by Claire Fuller, which I read for "A book related to an element on the periodic table" (chlorine).
I read quite a few other very good books in May. Two stand-outs were Euphoria by Lily King, which I read for "A book featuring indigenous people of a country" and Far North by Marcel Theroux, which I used for my rejects challenge - "A book about climate change" and "A book set in extreme weather."
I hope everyone else is doing well with their ATY Challenge. Happy reading!

My favorite book of the month, which I rated 5 Stars, was The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I used this for my reject challenge - "A book with a non-traditional family" and "A book that involves another world or planet or realm."
Another 5 Star book was The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins, which I used for "A book with a name in the title." I also really liked The Strays by Emily Bitto. I rated it 4 Stars and used it for "A book featured on a NPR Best Books of the Year list."
I hope everyone else is doing well with their ATY Challenge. Happy reading!

My average rating was 3.68 Stars. I gave a 5 Star rating to eight books.
My Top Three books were:
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
The Fair Fight by Anna Freeman
The Gods of Tango by Carolina De Robertis

My favorite book that I read in July (and which is currently my #1 for the year) was The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I used this for Week 33 A book you have owned for 1+ year but haven't read yet. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It really is worthy of all the raves it has received.
Another 5 Star book in July was Skin by Ilka Tampke. I completely loved this book about ancient Britain that basically almost no one else has read and am really looking forward to the sequel. I used this for my rejects challenge - A book featuring an ancient civilization and A book about someone you'd like to have dinner with.
I hope everyone else is doing well with their ATY Challenge. Happy reading!

That's great to hear as I just started The Secret History this morning.

I hope you like it as much as I did! (And, just so you are aware when you go looking for a copy.....it was published under two different titles....Skin and Daughter of Albion.)
Milena wrote: "That's great to hear as I just started The Secret History this morning.”.
I hope you're finding it worthy of all the raves it receives all over the 'net! I thought it was completely unputdownable.

And I finished Round 3 of the Summer Reading Challenge, which means I completed all 36 prompts!
My favorite books in August were...

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
Rejects challenge: a book related to a deck of playing cards and a 20th century classic
This was a re-read but it's been ages since I had read it. It was just as wonderful as I remembered. One of my all-time favorite classics.

Wanderers by Chuck Wendig
ATY Week 51. A book published in 2019
An end-of-the-world chonk-o-beast.....and I enjoyed every one of those 800 pages.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
Rejects challenge: a book that you're skeptical about and a book that is getting lots of praise from others
I loved Eleanor and I loved this book (even though I was pretty certain I would not).

My total page count was 3,006. I read 2 books for ATY challenge prompts, 4 books for my rejects challenge, and 3 books that did not count towards the ATY challenge.
I only have 3 prompts left to complete the ATY Challenge and plan to read those books in October.
My favorite books in September were...

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
ATY Week 41. A book from the GR Choice Awards

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
Rejects challenge: a book related to an obscure holiday (Space Exploration Day) and a book recommended to you by goodreads

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Not ATY

I only have 1 prompt left to complete the ATY Challenge and I just started reading it this morning. Almost there!
My favorite books in October were...

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
Not ATY

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
Rejects : A book mentioned in a blog and A book whose page count is a prime number

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
Rejects: A book connected to a dwelling and A book set after a time of war
I had almost the exact same stats as you this month -- 7 books for 2757 pages. I'm surprised that you liked Rules of Magic so much... it was one of my least favorites of the year, despite how much I like Alice Hoffman as an author. I just had a hard time connecting to the characters because there was no dialogue in the novel.

I really can't explain why but I found Rules of Magic to be utterly magical. I fell right into the story and couldn't put the book down. Alice Hoffman almost always does that to me, for some reason. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I know not every book is for every person, and I love reading reviews about books I hated but other people loved... sometimes, it helps me see the good in the book that I didn't see before.

I agree. Sometimes I'll read a review of a book I didn't like and am surprised at everything another reader found to love about the book. I guess that's why there are multiple billions of books out there.....all readers are not the same!

I read 10 books. My total page count was 3,032. I read 1 book for ATY challenge prompts, 2 books for my rejects challenge, and 7 books that did not count towards the ATY challenge.
My favorite books in November were...

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

The Lost Man by Jane Harper
Getting very excited about finishing off 2019 and starting a new year of reading!
