Book Concierge, same exact thing here except I gave out candy last year for about 45 minutes, and then we turned out the lights and hid. This year I was sick and couldn't have done it even if I wanted to.
My husband likes to do it. He has a lot. We live on the edge of town so we dont usually get any trick or treaters so it seems like a waste of time to decorate when no one sees it. I went trick or treating with my grandchildren and there were some people that really went all out.
We always do! This year besides the regular scary stuff we added orange lights around the door and hung some of that fake cobweb stuff that they had to walk through on the path from our driveway to the front door. They loved that! We had a nice ongoing wave for about an hour starting at 7. After 8 we only had one more visit and then no one else the whole night.

REALLY nicely scented hand soap / hand lotion set for the guest bathroom. And/or Fresh flowers.

My local library is struggling to get support from the community. I use it extensively. But it seems that many people have no appreciation for a library at all.
Thursday, Nov 15: Do you think libraries area thing of the past?No. Our libraries in Pittsburgh are utilized very much. Many of them have been remodeled and the last few will be remodeled within the next year or two. I have 3 book clubs at the closest libraries to me. There are always people in them. The library system has modernized itself with computers. The Downtown branch is looking for bigger quarters right now. If the Carnegie Library system does not have a book you want, they do interdepartmental loans with other libraries in Allegheny County plus we can borrow books from other Pennsylvania libraries also.

I live in a small rural community and I worry that the small towns will lose their libraries. Some already have. But the main branch is alive and well. They do a lot of things that dont revolve around books, mostly for children. The adult activities dont seem to be as well attended. I had suggested more activities for teens and preteens but was told they have tried them and they aren't usually well-attended. They have had an adult winter reading program in the past but I"m told this year it will probably be discontinued. I have also noticed they get less and less actual books and more e-books.

That's a shame. I was reading in the Book Riot newsletter about tax initiatives for libraries that were on the ballot across the country this year. About half were voted down. They were only asking for pennies and no one's taxes would have been raised outrageously. We did vote a few years ago for a tax for the libraries. I barely felt the blip of it in my property taxes, probably less than $1. Sometimes I think the people in charge do not explain it clearly enough for the taxpayers to understand how much it really will cost them. They'll say it will cost 65 cents on every $100,000 of your property assessment. I think if they said if your home is assessed at $20,000, your taxes will raise 13 cents (it took me about 3 minutes to figure it out) and it will go to improving your library. That makes it concrete and something that people can understand.
Our local librarian has told us that more print books are being checked out especially by younger people. I think people want the feel of the paper in their hands. It seems to draw you more into the store. I know I spend so much time on the computer for work and e-mail that I prefer prints for reading It is more soothing and relaxing.

My husband's cranberry-orange relish! It's not difficult to make, but requires getting out the grinder and makes a bit of a mess. So when he makes it (once a year), he makes a LOT of it. Freezes well. Sometimes I'll put a dollop into pancake batter and make cranberry pancakes. Great over vanilla ice cream. Or just as our salad course. Very refreshing in middle of summer, barely thawed out of the freezer.

Driving around and around the parking lot just to find a place to park is not my idea of a fun time. As for Small Business Saturday, I try to do that every day. I live in a rural area so I try to support our local businesses as much as possible. I only shop on line if I cant get it in our stores. I like to see what I'm buying.

My husband loves to go and watch though. I'm more of a Cyber Monday shopper. I can do it in my pjs. Like Koren, I try to shop at local small businesses all the time. We have quite a few in the area now.
