15. A book by an author from a Mediterranean country or set in a Mediterranean country

* Circe
* Death on the Nile
* The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
* The Iliad
I would like to find a book set somewhere like Israel or Croatia. Anyone read something from one of those countries that you would recommend?

Beautiful Ruins

Set in Italy: Foucault's Pendulum or The Island.

Backups are:
Clea - Lawrence Durrell (Egypt)
Eugénie Grandet - Balzac (France)

-The World of the End by Ofir Touche Gafla (Israeli author)
-The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero (Spanish author)
-Miss Ex-Yugoslavia: A Memoir (I'm counting this because Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are all Mediterranean countries and are all ex-Yugoslavia)
-The Nightingale (set in France)

I am planning to read Girl at War by Sara Nović, which is set (at least partially) in Croatia.
Other Croatia books on my TBR List:
The Hired Man by Aminatta Forna
The First Rule of Swimming by Courtney Angela Brkic
The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht

The Divine Comedy
If on a Winter's Night a Traveler
Dora Bruder or something else Patrick Modiano
and books by Georges Perec
But there are many more.
The New Yorker article about Egypt has The Complete Persepolis listed, but it's my understanding that the entire book is set in Iran? Thoughts?

I loved My Name is Red and am a big fan of most of Pamuk's novels. I may read his new book The Red-Haired Woman: A Novel or Exodus as choices for this prompt but they both also work for other prompts so I am still looking for options.

yes, that is not in Egypt. She starts out in Iran and then briefly lives in Europe somewhere (I can't remember now - maybe Germany?)

Thanks! I've heard of the first one you mentioned but not the others. I'll look them up.

Children of the Storm by Elizabeth Peters (set in Egypt)
And backup plans:
Shadow of the Rock (mystery set in Gibraltar)
The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax (mystery set in Albania - I have NEVER read a Mrs Pollifax book! how can this be??)
The Collaborator of Bethlehem (mystery set in Palestine)
The Tremor of Forgery (Highsmith thriller set in Tunisia)
I'm not being terribly diverse, all of the authors are American or English.

Finding You by Jo watson - also set in Santorini Greece
Seven Days of Friday by Alex A. king - greece
The Blue Between Sky and Water - Susan Abulhawa (Gaza/isreal)

Now you'll just get the titles:
Ukulele-Jam by Alen Mešković (Adriatic Sea)
Donna Leon's Commisario Brunetti series (Venice)
Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones (Barcelona, haven't read this, so secondhand recommendation by trusted people)

I just finished reading it. It takes place in Iran and Austria. The only reason I can think of that they would say Egypt is if maybe one of her relatives or a family friend took refuge there, but then it would have just been mentioned in passing. Its a GREAT book though if you can find someplace to put it (? the Not a Book category?)

Thanks! I have it on my 40 Before 40 list, so I will get to it eventually... I'm struggling with this prompt, so I was hoping I could slot it in here, but alas.

The Story of a New Name by Elena Ferrante

I chose People of the Book off my bookshelf which takes place in Sarajevo/Boznia & Herzegovina. As a back up option, I may use My Family and Other Animals (Greece), which was on my original plan this year, but I didn't get to, or Beautiful Ruins which takes place in Italy.

I need all the good easy reads. Thats my plan for next year.

Loved People of the Book!

How does The Talented Mr. Ripley fit this prompt? I have it on my to read list, but I haven't picked a prompt for it yet!

It's set in Italy (I believe on the coast).

I really want to get to this next year as well! I told myself I can't use France for this prompt though since I read so many books set there and I'm doing Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly for food prompt so I need to find somewhere to fit it in if I can.

And it has made the 4 month wait for my Italy trip almost unbearably long!

I loved this book: Anna and the French Kiss which takes place in Paris.
