We're only waiting for Sepideh to check in ... I'll message her again and just hyperlink to her log.
Let's open up the comments .. start with introducing yourself and tell us a bit about you, then we'll get to planning a group read or two?

I love all books. I read mostly fantasy and sci-fi these days but am open to reading almost anything from any genre. Except poetry – I’ve tried, I really have but I just don’t love it.
I’ve been a leader in some of the previous games and the most important thing I want you all to remember is we’re doing this for FUN! And to win. But mostly for FUN! Some of us will have 30 or more books by the end of the challenge, and some will have 5. Every single book counts! Sometimes life get’s in the way of reading and that’s never anything you need to apologize for. I’ve seen some teams and teammates get stressed out about not reading enough, and then stop checking in because they feel guilty. I promise you all we all understand – don’t hesitate to pop into our thread and share your struggles to find time to sit down with a book.
Only 9 more days till we start logging books .... Go Team 4!!

I'm Manuel, 25, I live in Austria and I've always loved books and reading. I'm a student of English and American studies, with a minor in French; I live with my cat, and well... that's about it about me.

We have 3 things to do to get ready for the race: most of the book picks for the obstacles can be different from reader to reader but there are two obstacle that specify the whole group must read the same book. Please post your suggestions for ...
1. A team name
2. A group read (any book)*
3. A Coffee and Books book (from here https://www.goodreads.com/group/books... )* ***EDITED TO ADD: Must be from 2017 or earlier (no books from this years reads are eligible)
*It's fine if not everyone ends up reading the books we chose but we still want to pick them so that anyone wishing to can score individual bonus points can complete the the obstacle.

i'm samantha and i live in minnesota in the us. i'm an ecommerce administrator for a small business and a bit of a homebody outside of work. i read across all genres really, but for some reason lean more towards fantasy in the winter. i'm excited to get started!

I'm the worst at name picking, so hopefully someone else can come up with a great one. Here are some brainstorming ideas to start with and build on (from google :D )
Team Afterthoughts (maybe work the number four in somehow ... a-4-thoughts, doesn't quite work)
4 Book's Sake
All 4 Books
Just one more chapter ...
2 - I'm super open to anything ... something holiday/winter related might be fun?
Evergreen Tidings from the Baumgartners
Winter Street
or maybe one of the December C& B reads?
3
Again, I'm open to anything .. I picked a few from the lists in a few different genre but don't feel really strongly about any in particular.
Eligible
Commonwealth
Illuminae
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
Brave New World
In the Woods

Circe is an amazing book, recently read it! Yule logs sounds interesting too, but seems to be a part of a series (and 25 books is a lot)
Open to everything though :)

Clear as mud? LOL
Rachel explains it here too ... https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Good catch on the series ... I totally missed that

to week that or we could also go.with We are number 4!
group read ...I'm not real sure in this one as I read a lot of series in mostly fantasy.
need to look at the C&B book link
Also, to introduce myself im Valerie I live in the states - Ohio I have 2 kids both girls that always having me trying to do something never a dull moment. I listen to audiobooks mostly as that's the least interruptions...I'm extremely excited to get started this is my first year in the winter games!

I bought a graphic novel omnibus (Cemetery Girl by Charlaine Harris), do you guys think that would count as sth I usually don't read? I can't remember if I've ever read a graphic novel.
Thinking of team names and of ways to motivate us all now.

My choice for a book in a genre not often read is a book of short essays. I'm considering reading Wizard of Oz as the first in a series. I've never read it. The trilogy or more is difficult as my reading time is limited.
I read a wide variety of books. Not on my list are horror and romance. I tend to read older books as I have piles of them at home. Newer books are checked out of the library.

I am in northern Illinois in the States. I am an elementary teacher. I enjoy reading nearly anything, but generally exclude sci-fi, fantasy and romance from my rotation. I am primarily a fiction reader.
I really can’t think of a clever team name. The only thing I came up with is Read ‘em and Reap.
I noticed that Winter Street has not been crossed off and I’m willing to read that. If other ideas pop up from y’all, I’m willing too.
As for Coffee and Books, I do have Commonwealth on my bookshelves, but am open to most anything. I’ve read AJ Fikry, Brave New World, and Eligible.
Welcome to everyone! I’m excited to begin!

I'm really looking forward to it too, I could really need the distraction at the moment.

Games open in just a couple days!!! Who's ready? What book are you starting with? Remember that if you have at least 100 pages left in the book that your are currently reading it CAN COUNT as your first book.
I have all three books from the Illuminae series borrowed from my local library so I think I'm going to start with that, and use it as my series. We just had our first big snowfall of the year, and I'm ready to snuggle up with some books and coffee (or maybe wine) and have a nice long read.
It's fantastic that most of us have checked in and are starting to get to know one another.
I'm going to start compiling all of our ideas for names and books so if you can think of anything else .. shout it out :D
We'll have a bit of a team vote in the next day or so.

I'd love to start with the series, does anyone have any suggestions for a nice series? Maybe I'll do Tommy and Tuppence by Agatha Christie, it's four novels and a short story collection.

I looked over the archives and noticed Lilac Girls, Chasing Rainbows, Fahrenheit 451 and The Forgotten Garden.
I'm considering Wizard of Oz for the first of a series. I've never read it. I have The Map That Changed the World to finish. I think there's over 100 pages to go. For a set I'm thinking of My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead and Green Grass of Wyoming. Then again, there are the Chinese Murder Mystery books by Van Gulik, but I don't think I have all of them and they can be difficult to get from the library. I try not to buy books anymore and get rid of most of those I have accumulated. For on obstacle I'm reading a set of essays. I have several books on writing I want to read. And, would a book about Uncle Scrooge comics that includes the complete comics work for the comic book obstacle?

If you like The Wizard of Oz, you should try the Wicked books! Only read the first one so far, but it was amazing!
Also, what time to we start? I'm a few hours ahead of you guys.

Challenge runs Nov 19, 12:01 am to Mar 4 11:59pm.
Any book you are currently reading that has more than 100 pages left counts as your first book. Any book that you are reading at the end of the challenge that has less than 50 pages left counts as your last book.
Manuel, to make it easy to track, just use these hours with your time zone, don't bother converting. Same amount of hours, even if you're off a few.
Fun fact ... As I type this message it is
8:29am for Samantha, Karen & Sarah
9:29am for Valerie and me
3:29 pm for Manuel

Choosing a series with lots of books would be a good strategy if you want to try for lots of bonus points. Must be at least three books, but can be as long as you want and there are some super long series out there.
I started looking up long series to a) try and get some extra bonus points and b) make it easier to pick books to read for the challenge (no thought needed ... just the one that comes next).
Here are few that I found when I searched for super long book series
Gardens of the Moon - 12 books
44 Scotland Streett
No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - 19 books
Discworld - 41 books
Temeraire
Dresden Files - 16 books
The Wheel of Time - 14 books

I think there's also lots of Narnia books if you want to add them to the list.

Yup, Rachel specifically says in the Rules that graphic novels are fine, BUT, there is also a page count rule - I don't read many GN, not sure if the page count will disclude some though?
1. The book must be over 100 pages to count - unless otherwise stated in an obstacle that will be set closer to the start date
2. Any and all formats will be allowed (e-books, audio books, hardback, paperback, graphic novels, manga, etc.)
*** Edited to add ... just looked up a bunch and they seem to hover at just over 100 pages, which is awesome!

I looke..."
Great archive pics, Karen. Thanks for the suggestions. I've added them to the main list at the top of the page.
I hear you about not buying books - I'm lucky to have a great library and try hard to only read books I can borrow :)
I would say yes to your Uncle Scrooge comic since it includes them.

Typically for book pages, we use whatever the goodreads summary says ... but if you can't find it, then yes, just add up the 3 individual books.

Does it matter which obstacle we start with? I need an interesting series!

Does it matter which obstacle we start with? I need an interesting series!"
Cool! I'm a goodreads librarian, so once you figure out how many pages it is in total, I can edit goodreads pages entry.
It doesn't matter at all which you start with - it doesn't even necessarily have to be an obstacle. You can read anything you like during the challenge, you just get more points for reading obstacle books.
Once we all get reading and start logging our books we can pick a couple to focus on as a team to try to get the whole team bonus, for for now just read what you love : D

Remember that you can actually start now, as long as you have at least one hundred pages left to go when the challenge officially opens at midnight

You can start logging books now (anything you are currently reading with more than 100 pages left counts)
Please check out the team announcements - message 2 and let us know if you have a name or books suggestion. Let's try to get them picked by the end of the week.
Go Team 4!!

I hope everyone is enjoying your books!
Congrats to Samantha for being first on the board to log a book!! Way to go Samantha!!!
I finished Illuminae - it's an interesting story told entirely with transcriptions of video files, emails, ims, memos and files. It took a bit of getting used to the unusual format but I really enjoyed it.
I'll try to update our points about once a week, but I couldn't resist getting our totals up today since we're off to such a great start.
Still no reply from Sepideh so I'm thinking we're going to be short 2 players, which is no problem because I'm pretty sure Rachel will just tell us to double our 'placeholder' score. That's what I'm doing for the moment so our average will be comparable with other teams, but I'll give Sepideh a couple more days to log in and then confirm with Rachel that's cool.

His Dark Materials
Farseer Trilogy - Actually the entire Realms of the Elderlings (16 books) is great.
Harry Potter
Percy Jackson - even better is the second series with Percy - Heroes of Olympus
Ender's Game
Red Rising
Gone
Millennium - Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (just the first three books - wasn't fussed on the new author)
Robert Langdon
Jack Ryan Universe
44 Scotland Street
Throne of Glass This does have a fair bit of romance, but it's one of my favourites ever, and there is a lot of story aside from the romance
