Sara There are lots of historical novels based on true stories:

Before We Were Yours
Beneath a Scarlet Sky
Victoria

What other suggestions do you have?

message 2: by Josie (new)

Josie Lacey | 82 comments If you want something a bit heavier, a lot of war fiction has at least some basis in fact. For example, A Farewell to Arms was based on Hemingway's own experiences during the war and Regeneration is based on real treatments that soldiers during WW1 received for shell-shock.

message 3: by Alisia (new)

Alisia (4thhouseontheleft) | 58 comments I am planning on reading I, Eliza Hamilton.

message 4: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 2377 comments I will be reading The Sun Also Rises as it is based on Hemingway`s travels and circle of friends.

message 5: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 2377 comments I recommend The Cottingley Secret

message 6: by Kenya (new)

Kenya Starflight | 985 comments Alice I Have Been and The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb, both by the same author, could count.

message 7: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (kristy67) | 53 comments If you want a really dark, hard to read horror book, the Girl Next Door is based on an actual murder.

Tonya (bookasaurustonya) | 80 comments Kristy wrote: "If you want a really dark, hard to read horror book, the Girl Next Door is based on an actual murder."

I just finished that earlier this week. It was brutal

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) | 896 comments I was told recently that The Phantom of the Opera was actually based on a true story, which is pretty horrifying, but I may count that one.

I also have to recommend Elizabeth Street for those who haven't read it.

message 11: by Paige (new)

Paige Bernard | 2 comments Do autobiographies count for this? I really want to read Somebody I Used to Know by Wendy Mitchell.

message 12: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 608 comments I'm thinking of Before We Were Yours

poshpenny | 1916 comments Paige wrote: "Do autobiographies count for this? I really want to read Somebody I Used to Know by Wendy Mitchell."

Novels are fiction, so an autobiography wouldn't really work. Unless they LIE!

message 14: by Linda (new)

Linda Varick-cooper | 20 comments Tracy wrote: "I'm thinking of Before We Were Yours"

That was very good! I'd recommend it, and definitely based on a true story.

message 15: by Leona (new)

Leona (mnleona) | 244 comments I finished The Highland Chieftain by Amy Jarecki yesterday. Two characters are based on real people. This may count.

message 16: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey | 94 comments Tracy wrote: "I'm thinking of Before We Were Yours"

I think thats what I'm going to do too.

message 20: by Linda (new)

Linda Varick-cooper | 20 comments Nicole wrote: "I'm going to read Child of the Jungle: The True Story of a Girl Caught Between Two Worlds"

That isn't a novel. It's a nonfiction account of her life.

The Chapter Conundrum (Stacey) | 404 comments I'm jumping on the Before We Were Yours bandwagon for this one!

I had originally planned to use it for my 2019 A-Z but did some shuffling! :)

message 27: by Sara (new)

Sara I'm going to read Fawkes. It's a fantasy re-imagining of the gunpowder plot with Guy Fawkes.

message 28: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Oertel | 764 comments I just finished Before We Were Yours, which was great. It reminded me of Necessary Lies, which was similar (although a different issue) and should work for this prompt.

I also think The Invention of Wings could work for this (and I recommend it), and possibly Next Year in Havana...

Oh and The Other Einstein was a good read!

I'm planning on A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story for now.

message 29: by Sara Grace (new)

Sara Grace (bassoonsara) | 123 comments The Stars Are Fire based on a true event! The 1947 fire in Maine. I never heard of it before I read the book.

message 30: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 355 comments Nancy wrote: "Beneath a Scarlet Sky
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library![book:Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resili..."

But only few of these are novels, the rest are nonfiction.

message 32: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 0 comments Since I plan on reading The Great Gatsby next year I will pair it with Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.

message 33: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 190 comments That reminds me, The Paris Wife is a good one. Its about Hemingway's first wife.

I decided to read The Sun Also Rises I've been wanting to read more of his work since after I read The Paris Wife. This book, and A Moveable Feast is referred to a lot.

message 34: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (lindseybo) | 30 comments NicholasSparks new book and tattooist of auschwitz

message 36: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Heaney | 210 comments The Yard by Alex Grecian

message 37: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 355 comments Vivian wrote: "Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win World War II"

But isn't that also nonfiction and not a novel?

message 38: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments Many of these suggestions are non-fiction, not novels based on a true story. Code Girls, Henrietta Lacks, Unbroken, to name a few. Narrative non-fiction, to be sure, but not novels.

message 39: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 39 comments All of the Outlander novels would work for this I think, since she bases them on historical events. I've already read them so I'll have to think of something else

message 40: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments Theresa wrote: "I recommend The Cottingley Secret"

I didn't realize this was based on a true story. Definitely a top contender for me.

message 41: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinajm) | 80 comments Lauren wrote: "I just finished Before We Were Yours, which was great. It reminded me of Necessary Lies, which was similar (although a different issue) and should work for this prom..."

Oh, my book club is reading Other Einstein this month, so that's perfect.

message 42: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 1198 comments I also have My Notorious Life on my bookshelf. I love books about medicine, especially in the past.

message 43: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 145 comments I’m going to read Cherry by Nico Walker. It’s a novel based on the authors experiences in the Army as a medic and his later struggled with heroin addiction and subsequent arrest for bank robbery. Looks like a really good read.

message 44: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 145 comments Raegan wrote: "Any YA suggestions for me?"

I read Brides of Eden: A True Story Imagined

message 45: by Aimee Dars (new)

Aimee Dars (aimeedars) | 102 comments Raegan wrote: "Any YA suggestions for me?"

Dreamland Burning is about the Tulsa Race Riots.

message 46: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 355 comments Stephanie wrote: "All of the Outlander novels would work for this I think, since she bases them on historical events. I've already read them so I'll have to think of something else"

But they are not based on any real story, they are just regular historical fiction, more or less. A historical event, like a war, is not really a story.

message 47: by Tina (new)

Tina (trwriteratwork) | 42 comments Oh! I could read The Tattooist of Auschwitz for this!! I just got it, this is exciting!

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

message 48: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 3 comments Tracy wrote: "I'm thinking of Before We Were Yours"

Oh, do it!! That book was fantastic!!

message 49: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I reecently read The Sun Also Rises is based on a true story. Anyone know if thats true?

message 50: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) I'm stuck between Alias Grace and The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Burial Rites would also work!
