The public hanging scenes were particularly tough to read. Why do you think people are drawn to these spectacles? Were you hoping that Amy Hatcher’s baby could be saved by Hero and Alexi?

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I've never understood why the public would want to attend a public execution, be it hanging or beheading. I definitely wouldn't unless it was a family or friend and I felt it important to bear witness for them. Which is why I think Hero felt compelled to attend the hanging. She wanted to mark the moment for a scared young woman who had no one else.

I did hope that either Alexi or Hero would find a way to save the baby. Surely they know of a decent home that could take the baby in.

For me it’s equivalent to people gawking at terrible car accidents. I’ve never understood that. What is it that you want to see? This was barbaric and inhumane.

I was really hoping that we find out what happened to baby Hannah. But, the author stayed true to the era😢

Agree with your and Veronica's comments. I think its just human nature to gawk. It would almost seem surreal to witness. I was so sad about the baby.

Joanna | 139 comments I have never understood the attraction, just like with the coliseum fights. Maybe it's a sense of morbid curiosity. Or maybe they are expecting to see a miracle?

I have no idea. It’s a curiosity gene I don’t have.

My thoughts exactly.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments To me, the hangings are theater for the poor. Only the wealthy can go to the theater. Hangings are like the horror movies of the day. I'm sure many watch between their fingers covering their eyes.

Unfortunately, I think you’re right.
