You're ruling out Fear Itself by Jeff Gelb (editor) which contains these short stories (hidden to save space): (view spoiler)
Is this short story from an anthology/collection written by a single or multiple authors? What do you think is the common theme?

I thought the theme followed the writers' own, personal fears, which is why I looked back at "Fear Itself"
Alternatively, I thought I might be from one of Wagner's "Year's Best Horror" collections, specifically vol. 19, but I was wrong again. None of his other Year's Best collections have titles that ring any bells.

If you can remember which book you read it in, mods can add that one on the group's shelves.

The story's narrator was recalling a childhood home with a cross-shaped attic. At night, he could hear something moving around quietly. One day, alone in the house, he realizes the monster is watching him from an open attic access behind him. He backs out without ever looking up and leaves the house.
Then he decides to go back in to confront his fear.
