When Serafina goes with Sarah to her home, she was protectful of her carpetbag throughout. Did you suspect she had the stolen money?

Yes it had to be the money didn't it. Nothing else would have been that precious to her.

Yes, it was obvious that Serafina had the money. It made me very suspicious of her throughout the story. I didn't buy into her story that Mrs. Gittings made her lie to bring her customers back. Sure she lied, but I don't think Mrs. Gittings had much to do with it.

Robin, upon reflection, I’m not sure Mrs. Gittings was having to push her very hard to do much of anything. I think the only thing she did against them was to hold back their money, probably knowing they’d bolt.

I know. Mrs. Gittings was just making sure they stuck around so she could get her share of the loot.

I think the only thing that bothered her about the things that Mrs. Gittings made her say was the heavy-handedness. I bet that Serafina could have been much more subtle about getting money from their clients, conning them for years without arousing any suspicion.

I’m inclined to believe that, too, Giulia. Mrs. Gittings was just a rough con. Serafina was much more talented in that respect.
