Let's admit it. Chemistry is a subject that no highschooler would voluntarily pay attention to. At least any normal high schooler, which Bryce definitely was. He could barely keep his eyes open in this class let alone pay attention. And today's double lab period was just simply torturing, plus yesterday's basketball practice did not help his energy at all either. Tapping his pencil absentmindedly he listened to the music on his phone using a hack he learned from a senior his freshman year (the trick is putting the earphone wire through a sweatshirt sleeve and secretly lean your ear in the hand with the earphone. Works every time.) And besides, A Tribe Called Quest was definetly ten times more interesting than whatever Mr. Freedman had to say.
But I guess it would have been better to be paying attention after all.
As his eyes fluttered closed to the sound of "Electric Relaxation" the other kids who were smart enough to listen all rose and started switching seats to be with their friends for the lab project. When he was just about to drift off into dreamland he was awakened by a sudden jolt in the lab chair he was sitting on, that was caused by another student scooting past him in an attempt to reach their partner. Jumping awake with the music paused he looked around at his now empty row. What the fuck? He thought to himself rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Where was he? What class was he in again? Oh shit, chemistry that's right.
Glancing at the board he read aloud "Chemical Mixing Lab?" and looked at everyone paired up around him. Well damn, is he gonna have to do this on his own? Standing up he looked in the rows behind him, desperate at this point when he spotted a girl equally as confused. Well, she'd have to do. Gathering his stuff he slid into the empty seat by the girl and offered her a smile. "Hi there partner!"
Skye was getting a bit nervous. A lab was something she definitely didn't want to do by herself. She might have thought mastering chemistry wasn't important in the grand scheme of things, but her parents definitely did. Skye didn't intend on being regulated to her house for a week because she didn't pass the next test.
Oh, thank god. She breathed a sigh of relief as the other boy slid next to her. She knew his name — Bryce — even if she didn't know much else. She'd seen him around the school every once in a while (after all, it wasn't a very huge school) and while they'd never talked, she thought she remembered one of her friends talking about him. He was popular, right? She looked him up and down. He looked like he was.
What am I even thinking?
She gave Bryce a friendly smile. "Heyyyy. I'm Skye." She realized he might have already known her name and added: "I don't know if you knew that already, but, yeah, hi." She drew her attention to the lab instructions the teacher had just handed out. "Also, I suck at this." She motioned to the paper. "So I am really sorry in advance." Honesty was the best policy, right?

Everyone either loved Bryce or at least knew of him. It was hard for them not to — he was the star of the basketball team, top in his class, and wasn't a complete asshole about it. Talking to people of all walks of life was his specialty, so you wouldn't see him confined to a niche of other jocks or haughty people who believe that everyone in the world owes them something. So sitting down to talk to someone he's only vaguely seen before but never talked to was not out of his comfort zone in the slightest.
He smiled at Skye. A friendly one, the one he gave to everyone on a daily basis. He wasn't new to making new friends, it was easy enough. Greeting, check. Smile, check. Now all they need is an excuse to start a start a conversation and like magic, they're best buds.
And she smiled back, which was reassuring. She wasn't creeped out by the fact that he just appeared in front of her ready to work like most shy high school students were. He flipped through the packets that were handed out by the teacher before looking back at her. "Chemical mixing? Oh this shit's easy, I could do it in my sleep."
