willaful I generally borrow audiobooks from the library, because I'm not a big re-listener, and they don't make it easy! I'm curious about how often certain series don't seem to be complete at Overdrive. I don't just mean that a specific library doesn't own them all, but that when you look them up on Overdrive, it's like they don't exist. (Ex: Anything past the first two Archangel books by Nalini Singh.) Do publishers deliberately limit audiobook sales to libraries?

Mara Pemberton (marapem) It's hard to say. It may have something to do with the publisher's of the book series, and what libraries are willing to spend on books. There are many strap cash counties and libraries right now.

I wish there was a site where you can all of the series of the book. It but it's only a dream.

Audible does the same thing. Many times books you want to listen to are for download, and low and behold you find out the book is the #5 in the series, and you cannot buy and download the first book to get the skinny on the main characters.

The library I frequent, there has always been a hit and miss on books that come in series. Sometimes they have all of them, and then sometimes they get a new book in a series that is #5 and they don't have the previous 4.

Often, for older series, libraries may have had the first books for rental until they'd met the maximum number of rentals contracted. They will continue to contract for new releases. I've seen earlier books in a series disappear following my rental and show up again later. I actively use the recommend feature to bring earlier books in a series back and it works.

Hilly | 14 comments Same problem w/ 3M. I haven't read p7 of the Kraken King because that is the ONLY part of the serial that they (still!) didn't get. I got tired of waiting, so I went ahead and read p8 to finish it up.

I always wishlist/recommend. I also cycle between print and the different ebook loan options. (And thank you for the referral to Open Library! It's another option!)

willaful I think it must have something to do with the publishers, because it's not a question of specific libraries -- the items aren't available for any library.

Jonetta, what do you mean in regards to 'the maximum number of rentals contracted'? I'm not so familiar with how library's work internally - on from the borrower end. Can you educate me about this?

Each publisher has their own rental pricing structure. Many allow a limited number of rentals at a specified rate. Once a library has met that number, the book is removed from the catalogue unless the library contracts the title again.

Dawn | 535 comments Wow. That is just ridiculous. If the library pays for a book in print, they can loan it out for the next hundred years....ugh

Some publishers are worse than others. You should check with your librarian, which is where I got my info. A year ago, there was one publisher whose rental rates were so outrageous, my library didn't carry any of their books. I think that's changed since I'm now seeing the titles and there was bad media about the former rates.

Sometimes a series is picked up mid-series and the earlier books haven't been recorded. Also, if a books is produced by Audible or is part of their ACX program, I don't believe it is made available for libraries to purchase via overdrive. I've also noticed that there are sometimes a lag time between when an audio book is released and when it shows up as available on overdrive.
