Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Let's have some nominations on what folks would like to read for the October group read. I'm suggesting we stay away from series books for those who feel compelled to read the previous ones first

I suggest we take nominations here for a week, ending Satuday August 23, after which either Ann or I will put up a poll for voting.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Looking forward to selecting a October group book. I have a few suggestions from my own to_read GR shelf. I'll read them anyway so am very open to other suggestions:
The Winter People
Night Film
Visitation Street

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments The Cronin is due out on the 23rd.

message 4: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments John Grisham's Grey Mountain is due out on Oct 21.

message 5: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Barry: I didn't realize the Cronin book was actually close to release, that's good news!

message 6: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments I think we stay away from books that haven't been released by September 25 or so, to give library people a chance to get the book in hand by Oct. 1.

message 7: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments The release date I saw for the new Cronin was 2015! Must be delayed. Or perhaps the media engine isn't cranked up yet.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Extending this thread another week to August 30 to allow for some more nominations. Sherry, anything interesting on your tbr?

message 9: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Gray Mountain looks like a good one, Barry!
Probably a bit tight with the 10/21 release date for an October book, but possibly later.

right now, it's jamie and clare and then some books i didn't get to this summer- an alice hoffman, amy tan, anita shreve.. not good for a group read for this group..
i also have a copy of FaceOff- edited by david baldacci which looks like a fun read.

I admit I saw the name John Grisham and ignored this automatically because I hadn't even been interested in a Grisham book in a very long time. Then I clicked on the link in Ann's post this morning out of mild curiosity, read the description and said "Wow!". I might actually want to read this one.

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I'll vote for GRAY MOUNTAIN! Have it on order already!

message 13: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Yikes, I am number 28 on the audio cd hold list at the library for Gray Mountain. Looks like a lot of folks are looking forward to it.

message 14: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments We normally cap nominations at 100 per person. Quality is admirable, but quantity will certainly get you noticed.
(please note I am NOT an admin here, and the real admins will be very quick to disavow anything I say. Sometimes I think I'm gut guy on Mission Impossible that got caught)

Um..... I am no. 128 for 14 copies, so I probably shouldn't hold my breath that I'll get it in time for an October read. If it wins I'll get it from Audible.

I like Grisham. :)

message 17: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments It looks like the nominations are highly in favor of Gray Mountain but the release date is Oct 21 making it potentially a better November candidate (*we can start the threads on the release date for early birds)
Do we need a poll or some other nominations for an earlier in October book. I know it is a loose series, anyone interested in the new Tana French The Secret Place? That release date is Sept 2nd.

I like French's Dublin Mystery Series since each one is like a stand-alone.

message 20: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Shall we do The Secret Place for October and Gray Mountain for November? I thought we had something for November; another Stephen King maybe? We can push that back a month.

message 21: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Carol: I think we are close to that very idea now!
I've got Gray Mountain starting on the release date of Oct 21 (for those who read on release date like Barry) and ending Nov 30.
I've got Revival starting on the release date of Nov 11 and ending Dec 30 so if anyone wants to do The Secret Place between now and then we can.

sounds like a plan to me.

message 23: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1346 comments I just reserved The Secret Place. My library won't tell us how many people are waiting for a book. Their reason, they think people will be upset if they are next but have to wait to get it. I think it is a stupid reason.

Idiotic! Maybe they should run an experiment and see how people behave, rescind it if people act up in a way that library staff can't handle.

message 25: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1346 comments I agree. It's just very annoying, because if a book has to many people waiting, I may decide to buy the book from Amazon.

message 26: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Amy: I agree, that is pretty silly to keep you in the dark on your hold position. I think DonnaJo's library does the same thing. Maybe they think it will discourage people from putting too many books on hold? ( which it wouldn't, but is terribly annoying for patrons)
Do you have a limit to how many you can put on hold? Mine has 25. For a while it was ten but then they relaxed it again. I can have 25 more on hold on Overdrive. I can see what number on the list I am there too.
Yesterday I got an email from Overdrive that a new feature was in place, very nice; you can set a hold to automatically borrow so you don't accidentally lose one by not downloading in the three day window, and you can suspend your turn where you stay on the list and move up but would hold at the number one spot until you took off the suspension. I like both features!

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1346 comments Ann, we can only have 7 holds. We do have the auto hold. Right now I don't have it set to that. I think I will change it.
