Laura Mitchell (laurarm) | 6 comments I am a former newspaper reporter/copy editor, free-lance writer, public policy analyst and disability rights advocate. I've just joined this group and want to know if my science fiction novel, The Reality Matrix Effect, is good fit. The book involves an alternate reality in which multicultural problems have been successfully addressed--until that society is threatened by people who want to return to the days of stereotyping and discriminating on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc. The alternate reality aspect of the novel is based in part on the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, and the plot involves a multicultural list of characters, including a major character who is a full time wheelchair user. Is my novel appropriate for this group?

Arie Farnam (ArieFarnam) | 4 comments Sounds like it to me. I'm fairly new here but I do know the genres well enough. That should fit.

I have also been in disability activism a lot, as a kid whether I wanted to or not :P and then later by choice. I haven't actually addressed those issues in my first books. I've stuck to more multicultural stuff but I think a blinkie MC is in the making someplace in my subconscious. :)

@Laura, I think any book that incorporates multiculturalism in some way is appropriate.

We just encourage those with main characters who are part of marginalized groups the most. Im not disabled, so I try to be careful when it comes to highlighting books that have disabled characters, but arent main characters. We try to make sure they're front in center, and not to push an abled person's story forward.

Laura Mitchell (laurarm) | 6 comments Actually, I not only have worked as a disability rights advocate; I also have lived with disability myself for many years. (Part of the background of Althea Milgrom, the character with the disability, is based on my personal experience.) Milgrom isn't the main character, but she is a pivotal character in the story, even when she's "off camera," so to speak.

I do hope that you and others in this group will give my book a try. The promotional price of $1.99 will be in effect at Smashwords until Aug. 28. The book also is available for the full price of $3.99 from Amazon/Kindle and from Barnes and Noble (as a Nook Book).
