Yvette Gonzalez The non-fiction book that I chose to read was Into the Woods by Jon Krakauer. I normally don’t read non-fiction books because to me they are usually dull and boring, but this book was really captivating. This book focuses on Chris McCandless, who is also known as Alex, and his journey to Alaska. Chris donated all of his savings which was twenty-four thousand dollars to a charity and he decided to go to Alaska. This book focuses on Chris’s life for two years that he spent traveling with no money and only had a hiking bag with him. Jon Krakauer does a really good job at describing everything Chris went through for his two years traveling and the ending of the book has you thinking a lot about life and what happened to Chris McCandless. Does he survive his trip to Alaska or not? You will need to read the book to find out. By reading this book, you will begin to appreciate nature and life a lot more because nature is now being overlooked and not many people focus on it anymore, instead they pay attention more to their phones or technology rather than looking up and enjoying nature. Krakauer states, “The freedom and simple beauty of nature is just to good to pass up and often overlooked.” Krakauer did a really good job at describing everything and everywhere Chris visited and stayed. When you read this book, it feels like you are there and can see and feel what Chris is feeling at the time. I would recommend this book to middle schoolers or high schoolers because it demonstrates that even though technology is advancing, we all need to take time and look at nature and separate ourselves from the technology.
