Cheryl (cherylllr) I signed up. And to clarify, it is free.

So now I'm going to fall in love with all these authors who don't have any novels or collections so I can't read more by them, I imagine.

Ah, the plight of the well read :)

Good point, I didn't think to add that.

The first line-up looks amazing, I love John Chu's short fiction. And you can't go wrong with Kowal and Yang. I haven't read any short fiction by Newitz, but I'm pretty sure I'll like it. The other two are new to me.

Gabi | 3441 comments Hey, and you can even do it, if you select "other" as country! Last time I tried something like that, I got a "sorry, not for your country" - which I HATE!

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments Here’s a life hack: The Tor site is kind of hilarious, it offers a free ebook every month but only for US/Canada residents. Meaning when you enter your email and choose “other” for country, it blocks you. Hmmmm, eeny, meeny, miny, moe, wonder what else to enter? I then entered US and voilat! Here is your free ebook.

That’s seriously the worst geo location check I have ever encountered which makes me think they don’t actually care to limit their distribution ^_^

CBRetriever | 6113 comments new one out today:

https://www.tor.com/2019/01/30/downlo...

I was able to get Tor books, Baen books and Humble bundles when I lived in France

message 9: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Yep I got my email this morning. I told them I was from the US when I signed up 🤪 There’s a Lady Astronaut one from Mary Robinette Kowal in there along with 5 others.

message 10: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 411 comments I also got the Tor.com bundle this morning. If there are enough of us who subscribe, we could do a separate thread for discussion of Tor bundle stories.

Same for me at a book club, you don't get a nice free book because of where you live even if you read English. What does it matter if we all end up buying the books from the same publishing companies anyway???

message 12: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I just got a Tor collection of novellas at Audible and it seems amazing. Here is the audiobook: Tor.com Collection Season 1 by Kai Ashante Wilson

message 13: by Anna (last edited Oct 01, 2019 07:20AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments If people want to discuss the 2019 newsletter collections, I'd suggest a thread for each book/newsletter. I can add links to all the discussions to the first post of this thread as they're started.

First book: Tor.com Short Fiction: January-February 2019
Second book: Tor.com Short Fiction: March-April 2019

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments The summer selection is available:

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments I must have missed the second book. I think. Kinda bummed- I was looking forward to it.

message 16: by Anna (last edited Oct 01, 2019 09:23AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments You can still download it! The link is on the GR page.

I also have no recollection of seeing the second one before, so I just downloaded it today.

message 17: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments Oh cool- thanks for the heads up Anna!

message 18: by Lena (new)

Lena Fickle (unicronq) | 3 comments Yay! This should make it easier for me to keep track of Tor's short stories, assuming my email provider cooperates.

message 19: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 504 comments I honestly thought they had given up since it had been so long since the second installment.

message 20: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I like downloading them onto my phone. That way I've always got something to read and they don't take up a lot of your time.

Nice that they have solved that problem with sending the files internationally.

message 23: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments The fall selection is here!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments And it looks awesome!! Does anyone have time to read a couple? If I started threads?

message 25: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I say go ahead and start them, I'm sure people will jump in!

message 26: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Ha ha, I just figured out where I’ve downloaded the summer selection! But I may join in on the autumn selection

message 27: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Haven’t checked my overnight emails yet. I’ve been waiting for the new one. I always download them straight to my phone so I’ve got something short to read when I’m waiting for an appointment.

message 28: by Anna (last edited Jan 11, 2020 01:58PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Some of the Best from Tor.com: 2019 Edition seems to be free for preorder in the US Kindle store. It has the same (but not all) stories as the newletter. TOC here.

Some of the Best from Tor.com: 2016 is also free, TOC here.

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Anna wrote: "Some of the Best from Tor.com: 2019 Edition seems to be free for preorder in the US Kindle store. It has the same (but not all) stories as the newletter. TOC here."

and it's free for US residents

message 30: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I'm not a US resident, and it's free for me.

message 31: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments that's good then. I just didn't want people to be disappointed if it was "priced"

message 32: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Oh OK, I read that as "It's only free for US residents."

Of course all of these stories are free on Tor.com, no matter where in the world you are.

message 33: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments There are a few things on Tor that are US only like this offer:

Ring in the New Year with the best of Tor and Tor.com's 2019 Debuts. $2.99 each! Offer available in the US Only. Ends 1/2/2020.

Possibly another group holds the UK rights (or another division of Tor)?

message 34: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I don’t know about each and every Tor.com published ebook, but I do know that all the stories in the books I’ve linked are on their website, which is free :) The fact that some of them are also available as collected ebooks, currently free, is a nice bonus for those who prefer reading on an ereader to reading online.

Enough about that, let’s concentrate on reading these free stories, in whatever preferred format is available to each of us!

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Some of the Best from Tor.com: 2020 Edition is available for pre-order, and it's free. I didn't check if there are any stories that weren't in the newsletters, but last year I think there were a couple.

message 43: by CBRetriever (last edited Jan 02, 2021 05:12PM) (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments there were two that were not in the monthly ones

and that link goes to a not available, so maybe it will be a day or two to show up for pre-order

message 45: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Anna, I just checked the compilation and there are no stories that were not included in the Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter releases. And it is now available for US residents.

message 46: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments It’s available for everyone now. So there’s nothing new Chessie? I have the ones from throughout the year so if there’s nothing new I won’t bother.

message 47: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments nope, but maybe the typos in the 4 issues have been corrected (there were some doozies).
