Ahhhh 😭😱 can't believe I finished this!
Wow so yeah a lot happened in this five small chapters!
So Lys! You were right about the resistance! They were not to be trusted at all! Mazen practically used her for nothing! He just wanted to kill her!
I reckon he is the spy for the Commandant! He is so untrustworthy, I can't believe he sent Laia to a horrible death! But I'm glad Laia proved him wrong and survived and could give him some results
I wonder what will happen to him in the second book!
I still don't know about Keenan, he's a confusing one too, don't know to trust him or not. Like he could also be a spy for the Commandant too
But what I really love was chapter 46 when the Commandant speaks about why she kept Elias. Just reading that chapter makes her a bigger monster to me, like why was she going to kill her baby that just popped out ? What kind of mad woman is she ?
Thank goodness he survived but I feel for Elias, he had a wonderful childhood, no matter how short lived it was.
But I really want to know the relationship between the Commandant and her father, what could she have done to make him hate her so much?
Hopefully more family history is given in the next book
Laia plan was good to free Elias and her Izzi escape. I can see she has grown from the start, she's braves and willing to help others despite what happens to her. It will be a hard journey for Elias and Laia to free her brother, especially with Helene as the blood strike and most likely the one who will be send to hunt them down!
Overall I love and enjoyed this! And thank to all who have commented and shared their thoughts! You made this journey even more thrilling! :D
I have the second book ready as well, does anyone want to BR the sequel with me ?

Yeah I totally knew something fishy was happening with the Resistance, it was obvious from the start with all that talk about the traitor in it, the way that there were no information about Darin just vague insinuations. And yeah they were horrible, especially Mazen. I think the Resistance now got very far from its previous goal of fighting and aiding Scholars. Now it only sees its own interests and fighting for those. And I find it very sad because as we can see with Laia some Scholars really need them to help them and they prove that they will not.
However the way that Mazen was planning from the very beginning to get rid of Laia, especially the way he did with the Commandant was despicable and I truly hope that he will get his comeuppance! I'm not certain that he is the traitor but it would not surprise me at all given his character.
You are right about Keenan, I also don't know what to think of him. In those last chapters he seemed genuine and he wanted to save Laia but something rub me wrong with me (maybe my preference for Elias :)). I'm also curious about his reaction when he discovers that Izzi is the one that benefited from the escape plan.
That chapter 46 was everything I wanted! I was waiting for that confrontation between Elias and the Commandant, about her explanation, a glimpse into her motives. And I was not disappointed. It was horrifying! When she described what she thought during her pregnancy, how she regretted saving his life, I thought her despicable. She really is the monster in this serie but in a way that humans can be. She seems like a real tortured mad woman and I'm pretty sure that she will grow more heinous in the rest of the trilogy. I'm also very curious to know more about the relationship with her father, I don't think it was just her pregnancy that caused the rift between them.
But I loved absolutely loved Elias' answer, I think to her it was the best comeback ever. She will never be free because a person like her can't be free, she will just be chained with her hatred and her cruelty. And I loved him so much for his acceptance and his morality!
Oh I seem to be constantly changing my mind about Helene, she's really a hard character to peg down. I'm glad we got an explanation about her motives and the deal she made. But I don't understand her need to obey absolutely and against everything. I'm pretty sure the second book will delve more into this but yeah I'm still confused about her. Though she did redeem herself a little in those last chapters.
Finally Laia. I'm really glad that she grew more confident and brave, her character development is really well initiated and I can't wait to see her grow more! I really like where Sabaa Tahir is going with her especially in the end. I loved that she refused to save herself and let her friends pay for what happened (it was such a nice change and way to get back to the beginning). Now she will become more and more confident and it will show in her interactions with the others characters. She and Elias will certainly need it if they want to accomplish theirs plans. I'm so excited to see what will happen. Their path will surely be hard and paved with difficulties.
Overall I also enjoyed it a lot, Sabaa Tahir really did a wonderful job with the pace she set, her world building, her character development. I loved it (though I have to admit I'm not a big fan of love triangle :) but I'm really pumped to read the rest of the serie!
Now I have babbled for such a long time and my post is very very long but bear with me, I'm almost finished :)
I also would like to thank all the people who shared their thoughts, it was such a great experience (thank you Karen as well, I loved reading your feelings about it and interacting with you :D)
I would absolutely love to read the second book with you Karen as I also have it! It would be such a great pleasure :)
That's great to here Lys! I'm glad you were able to read this with me and the others who commented! It wouldn't have been fun without you, so thank you for sharing your thoughts with me :)
And congrats on completing your first BR! :D
Yep you were right about the Resistance. Yeah I agree, they're suppose to be the light for the Scholars and this just proves they dont live by Izzat anymore. Everything that the Lioness live, fought and died for has all come to an end. Quite upsetting
I agree! I despise Mazen more now!
I do have my suspicions on who might be the traitor, there's Mazen for obs reason, but I think maybe Keenan could be one, Idk we will see
Yeah Keenan did seem he wanted to help and save Laia, but who knows his true intention, hopefully we find out more in the sequel.
Haha you're not the only one! I 100% prefer Elias over Keenan any day! ;)
yeah, he will not be happy about that! Especially if he sees Laia with Elias. Keenan seems like the really jealous type
I know! That chapter was something I really wanted to read! She is just so cruel and horrible.
And I agree with you, there seems to be more between her and her father. Hopefully more is mentioned in the sequel!
OMG YES! Go Elias! It was the perfect comeback for someone so horrible! Elias is just love x
I agree, but I like it either way, because it makes Helene's character more genuine. She wants to do good for the empire, but also wants to help Elias, but I guess in the end she chose the Empire, just as Elias chose to defy it. I still can't believe she didnt hesitate to behead Elias. Like that takes courage to behead your best friend. But yes, I guess she did redeem herself for letting Elias and Laia go, but I fear that is the start of her troubles
Yes, love how much Laia has grown, and you're right there is still more room for improvement for her. But I'm glad she realises that she has more of Darin and her mother in her than she realised
Yeah, hats off to Sabaa Tahir, because that book was amazing, great start and I can see much more will happen !
I dont like love triangles either, but I can see that she will end up with Elias, like there is more than spark between them! Much more than Keenan that's for sure haha!
Aww thank you Lys, it was a great pleasure to have you share this journey with me! Thank you for participating :) I loved connecting with you about these characters, the good and the bad!
Awesome! Thats great to hear:) I have added this comment in this Thread where we can ask other members if they wish to join, and a folder will be added in the off group for us to interact together :)

I really can't wait to pursue it with the second book :).
Chapter 45:
He said the same thing to Elias. An Ember in the Ashes. I like Keenan too. I hate Mazen. He wasn’t that traitor but it’s clear he just wants everything desperately. Obviously, he wouldn’t have risked so many lives for one boy. Oh, I can’t wait for her plan. What is it?
Chapter 46:
This hits right home. I love Elias the most!
Chapter 47:
I think the Cook will die. I was rather fond of her by now. Laia will eventually find out who she was. Maybe her mother did do something wrong.
Chapter 48:
He’s gonna live, he’s gonna be fine. Then why the hell am I on the verge of crying? Damn you, Sabaa!
Chapter 49-50
Oh, Helene… she loves him so so much. Now she has to bear with Marcus. She did it all for him, every single thing. She loves him so much.

@Lys I didn't want to start it either and one moment I started this, the next it was finished! I need the next one, but this month is so packed. And I want the 4th to be released too!

Oh, I guess I'm right when I say that all of us here feel you, Maggie!! I didn't expect to love it and I started it for no reason. I didn't really want to and then I couldn't stop. Yes, that part sucks, I don't want to wait a whole year... but you can also stop after book 2 (like some of us did-even if temporarily) since the cliffhanger isn't so big in the end of book 2.
Looking forward to more of your thoughts :)

The end was the best part for me. When I finished it I had to read the second book and continue the story.
I also didn't plan on reading it in January but I decided to give it a go and I'm not regretting it because I ended up loving it. I'm also of the same mind as Aqsa, it was a good idea to stop and take a break after the second book since the end is not that huge cliffhanger that makes you need to continue (and I had such a hard time connecting back to reality after the second book so I'm glad I took a break). I'm not anticipating finishing the third book because waiting until 2020 to get the rest... yeah not looking forward to it!
I'm also looking forward to your thoughts Maggie :)
Ahhh feels good to finish this book. I really want to read the rest of it soon
This is perhaps my favourite part of the series, if I was awesome to see so much backstory happening and to see Helene and Elias coming together and helping each other one last time
I still can’t believe Mazen and how he tried to get rid of Laia. He used her so badly!
I really wanted to know more about Cook and about Helene’s power. Hopefully in the next few books we can have these questions answered
Can’t wait to read ATATN with you Darce :)
