John R I think this is my third year in Read Scotland, and I'm sure this year will be as much fun as the previous two. This year I'm hoping to read a number of non-fiction books relating to the 1820 Radical Rising in Scotland. But this group has motivated me to read some of the new young authors in Scotland, and I'm looking forward to reading Mayhem & Death by Helen McClory in January.

Welcome back, John, glad you're here for a third year running :) Good luck with your challenge. I should read non-fiction more, I enjoy it a lot, but always get distracted by novels!

John R 1. The Industrial Revolution in Scotland by Christopher A. Whatley.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short book. Most books on the Industrial Revolution in the UK focus on England, but this one looks in detail at the Scottish experience of industrialisation in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Melanie | 61 comments Do you know of any historical fiction that deals with the industrial revolution in Scotland? A long shot but I am hosting a reading through the ages challenge this year, so it would be fab if there was a book like that!

That's a really good question Melanie. My immediate reaction would be that most of John Galt's better known fiction (like Annals of the Parish, or The Member) reflects the impact of the industrial revolution in Scotland to some degree.

John R 2. Dead Inside by Barry J. Hutchison

Another book in his "Space team Universe" - enjoyable Sci-fi comedy, but not as good as his "Space Team" series.

John R 3. Another Time, Another Place by Jessie Kesson

As well-written as other of her books, but somehow the characters in this one don't hold your interest.

4. Mayhem & Death by Helen McClory

An interesting collection of short stories from a young Scottish author. Definitely one to watch out for.

I’ll look out for the Mayhem and Death one, even just for the woodcut illustrations :)
