Welcome! Feel free to introduce yourself and share what types of book you like to read, your favorite country settings, your favorite books, etc.

Yrinsyde | 208 comments Hi all! I'm Catherine in Melbourne. I'm a medical librarian and I have the travel bug irl. I also love reading about travelling and about ordinary (or extraordinary) life in other places. My Canadian husband spent some time as a child in Kenya and Nigeria and I love his stories. I've been tempted to read more from countries in Africa for a little while now. My fav countries at the mo are Maigret's France and Wallender's Sweden.

Hi - love seeing Aussies here! If you haven't yet, check out Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for Nigeria. Love her writing!

Welcome, Catherine. I have yet to read Henning Mankell and feel much guilt about that, particularly given the volume of translated detective/mystery novels I read, and I own 3 or 4 unread Mankell novels to boot. Help me break through in 2019. Which Wallender is your favorite?

Yrinsyde | 208 comments Hi Carol! I was thinking I don't have a fav but then I looked at the list of Wallenders and yes - An Event in Autumn was great. I also enjoyed Faceless Killers, the first in the series.

Kim | 44 comments Hi I'm Kim
Joining in at the 11th hour and it's been a fun project seeing where I've read around the world in 2019. Most of my reading is Australian new releases but I like to read widely and this is another great way to vary my reading.
My other reading is listed on my profile up to about 170 ish books so far this year.
My list is here:

V.ya (vyvv) Hi, I'm Vya.

I decided in 2018 to try to read books from different countries, but I'm doing it very slooowly. :) My interpretation of this book tour is the country where the author is born. So far I've read 26.

It's a bit too late to join the 2019 challenge, so I'll be joining the 2020 one.

Welcome Vya - we’re all reading at our own pace so travel as slow as you’d like! Looking forward to join joining us on our 2020 travels. I see you already have scheduled out some destinations - way to go!

Hi Kim - welcome! I think we welcomed you in another thread, but if not apologies and a big welcome! Nice that you’ve been able to focus on Australia - there’s a lot of ground to cover Down Under!

Rita Chapman | 15 comments I'm an Australian author and I've written books in the Sudan, Australia, Egypt, England and on a cruise from Sydney to London. I also enjoy reading books based on other countries and have read a couple lately which I have enjoyed, set in Sri Lanka.

Hi Rita - welcome, we have a few folks from Australia in the group - you’re in good company! Nayomi Munaweera has written a couple of books set in Sri Lanka. Both are outstanding.

Rita Chapman | 15 comments Thanks for the tip Lilisa. The ones I read were by Dinah Jefferies.

Oh good, I think I have one of hers on my Kindle. I haven’t read her before.

I’ve read one of hers - unfortunately wasn’t a hit with me, worth a second go around though.

Karen Witzler (kewitzler) | 79 comments Hello Everyone -- I'm Karen - a woman in her seventh decade living in the USA - I believe I was a member here years ago. I am generally terrible with Challenges and Groups, but do wish to read widely in terms of world geography and culture. My 10 year plan is to read a great deal of what used to be called The Western Canon in literature -- a goal since childhood, but insufficient for the modern world. So I am challenging myself to read books from 15 other places per year -- places not Great Britain or the US. You have such great ideas here, I know you will help me along. I read a lot of Children's Picture Books and Food Writing, as well as novels, memoirs, social sciences, poetry, plays.... I enjoy lists.

My favorites from 2019 have been: Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss (England) and the Picture Book Islandborn by Junot Díaz (Dominican Republic).

Happy travels, happy reading.

Welcome (back) Karen! Great to have you traveling around the world with us. Andrea is hitting the road with some food reads in 2020 so you might find some good titles there. We’re all over the place around the world - I bet you’ll find great reads. We’re looking forward to “stealing” ideas from you too. Happy trails!

Some interesting titles there, Catherine. Another one I'm looking forward to, set in Trinidad, is Love After Love by Ingrid Persaud (out in March/April, I believe).

I just realised I don't have anything for the Caribbean in my food list for 2020! How?
