Aaron (zalejin) | 248 comments I have to admit I am shocked with everything you've read, you haven't done Mistborn haha. Hope you enjoy it. Also how did are you finding the Shattered Sea series? I really enjoyed it and by all accounts, his First Law trilogy is even better.

THIS. I thought for sure that you already read it, and the Farseer trilogy as well :O
Between those two, Witcher and Temeraire, you'll have a great reading year :D
(I haven't read the rest so I can't comment on them)

Well, to be honest, I just haven't the time to read everything. I have read the Alloy Era books in the Mistborn world and they are some of my favorites. Wax and Wayne, along with Hadrian and Royce, are my favorite buddy teams.

So, I purposely trimmed this years challenges to read things I believe I'll find more appealing. I saved what I believe would be better books in a series and I also would have the freedom to read what I'm in the mood for. It should be a very good year in reading for me.

Finished Warhost of Vastmark. Great Janny Wurts as usual.

Well done!
I read only one book by Janny Wurts (To Ride Hell's Chasm). I loved it to pieces, but it took me forever to read. I didn't have sufficient mastery of the English langage to be able to read it 'smoothly'. It was more than a year ago... I think I'll try another standalone of hers soon.
If anything, I'll be able to jauge if I improved :p

message 10: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Her first book, Sorcerer's Legacy, is really good, especially for a first book. I think it's the shortest she's ever written. The Master of Whitestorm is good, but pretty long. It's more epic like her War of Light & Shadow series books. If you like short stories, That Way Lies Camelot is a great collection of hers.

message 11: by Virginie, Meow. (new)

Virginie | 898 comments Mod
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll go with Sorcerer's Legacy then, and take a look at her short stories collection :)

message 12: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (zalejin) | 248 comments Nice, I hope you enjoy the original series. If I am being honest I can not decide which I like better (probably leaning to the original just because it is complete) Looking forward to your thoughts.

There's also, three short stories in the Wars of Light and Shadow series. They can be purchased on her website. I'm not sure if they are anywhere else.

To be honest, I am looking forward to completing the first one. Sanderson is on my list of favorite authors.

Lesia Joukova (lesiajoukova) | 45 comments Oh cool! I'm almost reading along for the Witcher series. I recently finished the Sword of Destiny. Eager to pick up the next one but I consume those in moderation. I don't want to run out of Geralt awesomeness. How do you like it so far?

lol! If British children could write half as well as people learning it as an additional language, our results would soar!

message 24: by Virginie, Meow. (new)

Virginie | 898 comments Mod
Ah, that's what you meant! x)
I think that people learning a langage may have a better grasp of the grammar rules than the natives, since they had to understand them rather than using them 'instinctively'.

We’re also battling text speak. In the last couple of years children have stopped capitalising i. They don’t punctuate, the use of ‘would of’ is becoming a norm, might of etc.

Urgh, I hate when people don't punctuate even a little bit :/

message 28: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) "Text speak", lack of punctuation, & proper capitalization all drive me crazy in novels. It's one reason I read 1 star reviews before reading a book. If I see there is too much of any of those or the dreaded stream-of-consciousness, I won't bother with a book. A little of any is OK to make a point, but our language is too goofy to do much. For instance, we have many homographs & without punctuation to help define them, I might have to read a sentence several times to ferret out the meaning. Yuck.

True confessions , I actually started Warhost of Vastmark in the middle of December. I knew I wouldn't finish it till 2019 so I waited to put it down. IMHO, Janny's books are written to read slow and savor them.

Finished The Time of Contempt. I was a little bit disappointed with this one. However, I'm still going to finish the series. Also, finished The Fall of the Readers. It was a great kid's fantasy series and I recommend it highly. Next on this challenge will be Baptism of Fire.

Finished Baptism of Fire. Liked it. I'm going to read the BOTM, Empire of Sand, then moving on.

message 48: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Janny is an excellent artist, isn't she? I bought one of her dragon paintings for Lauren, one of my daughter-in-laws. She's into dragons in any medium, but she says that's her favorite.

message 49: by Tnkw01 (new)

Tnkw01 | 2293 comments Mod
I really love Janny. She is talented in so many ways. I don't know of very many authors that put thought into their dragons like she does. They are so believable, the different species she describes make them seem real.

I finished Angel of Storms. I am really loving this Series. It's really good.
