I wonder with some books whether they’re almost written with a movie in mind - in that the author is better at thinking in images than crafting a story in text form. Was this the issue here, do you think?

I doubt it, just because this book was this author's debut (and I think only book written so far). Plus the ending was not as "exciting" as it could have been (and was in the movie). The plot twists are pretty ridiculous, so a ridiculously dramatic/exciting ending would have fit the tone.
It felt written by someone who has read a lot of psychologically thrillers, and watched a lot of thriller movies though.
Susie, I'd suggest people to watch the movie instead of reading the book. The movie was campy and almost made fun of itself. The book didn't have any of that fun.
Stephanie, a mommy blogger does her friend a "simple favor" to pick up her kid from school, then vanishes. This is basically a rip off of a few things combined- the book Gone Girl and the movie Les Diablique. The weird part is she mentions this movie in the book (so I got curious and wiki-d it and (view spoiler)[that completely gave away the plot of this book. (hide spoiler)].) This book fell victim to many trends- alternating narrators, inserting blog posts within the text, the "girl" phase. It's trying to check all the boxes- with resulted in an intense plot with too simple/childish of writing.
Ok, that review sounded harsh. In defense of the book- it's insanely easy to read, the pace is fast, and I love unreliable narrators. EVERYONE in this book is terrible and unlikeable- and personally, I loved that. You have been warned.
