Original post here:
************
I finished The Quiet American by Graham Greene today. I did not really like it, but it seems to tick off several prompts actually:

“Perfect” – Read a book about drugs and drug use
“Bury Me” – Read a book in which a character dies
“C’mon” – Read a book that didn’t sit well with you
“This is How it Feels to Have a Broken Heart” – Read a book that takes place during a war or features a character who has served in a war
“That’s No Way to Get into Heaven” – Read a book in which the main character(s) does something wicked
“Endlessly” – Read a book and take credit for it here if it felt like it was never going to end
“Doin’ it By Myself” – Read a book in which the protag is a hermit/antisocial/lonely

There. And I thought it was a lost time.

Hi Lori, thanks for doing this, I really loved the summer reading challenge, it helped me to read much much more and also various genres. So I have my hopes up, this one will do that too :)

Catka | 151 comments Finished Belgravia by Julian Fellowes yesterday. Would probably tick off more tasks, but I am going to go just for this one:
“Architects & Engineers” – Read a book that takes place in a city - as it actually takes place in The City, in London, which I love and one of the characters works as a developer of parts of London in 19th century, which was very interesting point the book was making.

message 6: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments Finished Little Women and ticking off “Red Oyster Cult” – Read a book that features a mother or focuses on the character’s relationship with their mother. What a suitable name of the task, this really felt like some kind of a cult.

message 7: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments With The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England I am ticking off:
“Amsterdam” – Read a book set in a different country - as I live in a very small country, most of the books I read are set elsewhere. This is set not only elsewhere but also elsewhen :)
“One Man Wrecking Machine” – Read a Sci-Fi book (extra points if it features time travel) - don't like and don't read sci-fi unless it is very funny, so I will count this

Catka | 151 comments I have finished listening to the audiobook of A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett and it left me with mixed feelings, as it was not really a good quality literature, but it was strangely entertaining - like chips for brain. Ticking off:
“Demons” – Read a book that features an evil entity or someone with evil intent - like every single Follett's book, also this one featured a bad bad villain with endless evil intentions
“Getting Even” – Read a book about revenge - like every single Follett's book, also this one featured actions based on revenge, the book (view spoiler)
“Bury Me” – Read a book in which a character dies - like every single Follett's book, also this one featured gruesome murders of nice characters by the evil villain
“Diane” – Read a book with a female protag - like every other Follett's book, also this one featured a strong female not behaving like an usual specimen of her own sex of the time in which the book is set
“Either Way” – Read a book you’ve been on the fence about - as I said, mixed feelings. The same schematic plot like other books I read by the same author, same types of characters, silly plots, even sillier endings, but still, I had fun listening to it.
“Say That to My Face” – Read a book someone would classify as a “guilty pleasure” - see above

Catka | 151 comments Ok, perhaps this is becoming too easy, so I am going to restrict number of prompts to four per book.
I have just finished a book written by a popular Slovak comedian and actor Július Satinský called Gundžovníky, which is an untranslatable word, not even correct in my own language, but loosely translated it means "Books of gossips". It is a book of memoirs of his family at that time and it nicely ticks some of the more difficult prompts:
“Barrel of a Gun” – Read a book written by or featuring a movie star - as I wrote above Satinský was beloved actor and comedian
“Fa Fa” – Read a book that features a made – up language or dialect - author was also very good at playing with words, uses a lot of local or slang or just plain made-up words, the name of the book is an example
“Backyard” – Read a book written by an author from your hometown/city/state - tick
“Never Coming Down” – Read a book that’s set in the 70’s - tick

message 12: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments So, I have found another perfect match for the guilty pleasure prompt. I was just browsing my library's catalogue for the books with "Christmas" in the title, as I was in this baubly spirit in December and incidentally found Christmas Angel by Jo Beverley - a very simple romance book, which hardly bothered with any plots before the pair reached their happily ever after. I should have been warned by the cover, when I found it on the shelf, but I just thought it would be a nice light Christmas holiday reading to go with my lazily hanging around sofa and eating cookies. I did not mind really even now, it made for a nice relaxing weekend. So ticking off:
“Untitled Hidden Track” – Read a book that you uncovered accidentally
“Say That to My Face” – Read a book someone would classify as a “guilty pleasure”
“Dear Valentine” – Read a book that takes place on or around a holiday

message 13: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments Oh my, I happily forgot that I also finished The Only Story by Julian Barnes, which definitely confirmed that Barnes would not be my favourite author. I read it for my bookclub, but I did not even go, as I felt I had nothing nice or interesting to say about it. In fact, I had nothing at all to say about it. At least it ticks some prompts:
“Eden” – Read a book about temptation
“The Prize” – Read a book about someone who’s lost themselves
“Dissolve” – Read a book and take credit here if it didn’t leave a lasting impression

message 14: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments I finished another book by the Slovak comedian and actor Július Satinský called Listy Oľge (Letters to Olga), which is a collection of letters he exchanged with his first wife Olga Lajdova, who later died tragically in an airplane crash. They wrote about love, relationships, and places they visited, but also about books, movies, ballet (she was a dancer) and other forms of art. It was very charming.

“Mona Lisa” – Read a book about art or that features art
“Love for Me” – Read a love story - this felt like reading The Love Story

message 15: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments In the meanwhile, I forgot that I did not finish the Middlemarch by George Eliot - I tried to listen to it twice (started from the beginning the second time, about half a year later after the first attempt), but I was just heartily bored. The author kept introducing more and more characters and one was more unlikable and uninteresting than another.
I am glad Audible allows you to return books if you do not like them.
Ticking off:
“I’m Through” – If you’re reading a book that you’re just not into, DNF it and take credit here

message 16: by Catka (last edited Feb 19, 2019 12:26AM) (new)

Catka | 151 comments Fortunately, I also read books which were really good. One of them was The Alice Network by Kate Quinn, which was an excellent tribute to the women spies in the WWI and II.

“Great Escape” – Read a book while you’re on a road trip, or in which a portion of the book takes place in a car - the heroine takes a road trip to France, looking for a lost cousin and unveiling the past stories, also I read this while on a business trip :)
“What You Wish For” – Read a book that was on your wishlist - it was on my wishlist for Christmas and also on my friend's wishlist, so I bought it for her and we both read it and loved it
“Hang On” – Read a book that’s about another book, or is written as a book in a book - Baudelaire was heavily featured in the book, his poetry, his Les Fleurs du Mal and also his white marble bust.

message 17: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments After attempting to listen to the bleak Middlemarch (see above), I wanted something crazy, relaxing and fun. To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis was the right choice.
Among other features, this was also a tribute to the Three Men in a Boat (and was much funnier than the original), so lots of it took place in a boat on a river or very close to a river or in Oxford - so “Happy Frappy” – Read a book that takes place near or on a river
It also featured people from the future messing up with the past, while trying to rebuild the Canterbury cathedral and also reintroduce cats, which went extinct (however impossible that sounds) in the future - so “I Hope Tomorrow is Like Today” – Read a book that takes place in the future
“Well” – Read a book that takes you down a weird, trippy rabbit hole - see above. But it was good weird and trippy.

message 18: by Catka (last edited Feb 11, 2019 01:03AM) (new)

Catka | 151 comments During the weekend, I have finished The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang and got a very pleasant surprise by liking it more than I expected.

“Love for Me” – Read a love story - I have already ticked off this prompt, but I am going to take it again, because I just kept saying to myself throughout the book - oh, so this is how real love is supposed to feel. Also the reservations and fears while falling in love both characters experienced felt quite real to me.
“Hercules” – Read a book about a mythological character - as much as I liked the book, the male character of Michael felt a little mythological, i.e. unreal. He just seemed too handsome and muscular and at the same time sensitive and understanding and putting Stella first on all occasions, while at the same time deeply caring for his mother and family. Um. I have yet to meet such a person in real life. (Also, I found last year I am really not into the mythology stories, not even the ones with the "fresh new point of view" such as Circe or the American Gods. So I am unlikely to read anything more appropriate for this category.)
“Long Night” – Read a book that kept you up all night - usually I can't stay up all night, I do not have enough energy for that and am unable to function the next day if I don't get enough sleep. But this book kept me reading well into the small morning hours, so I am going to count it here.
“Mind Kontrol” – Give into the hype and read a book that everyone else is talking about - this book just kept popping up in every other Goodreads and other bookish sites' discussions, articles or competitions, including winning the Goodreads Choice Awards, so I finally put it on my Dear Santa list and it got picked up by my Goodreads Secret Santa for my Christmas present. I am glad it did.

message 19: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments Finished The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and don't really know what to think of it. Anyway, it ticks the following prompt in any case:
“Homecoming King” – Read a book about high school or a book that features teenagers

message 20: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments Just finished Fatherland by Robert Harris - a book set in an alternative history in which Germany won the WWII. Excellently portrayed, one feels chilled by the what-could-have-been.
Ticking off “The New Underground” – Read a book that takes place in a dystopian setting/time, or features a cult

message 21: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments Also during the weekend I finished A Tale of Two Cities by the famous Dickie and it did not really leave any lasting impression, but I am ticking off “Fall in Two” – Read a book with a number in the title

Catka | 151 comments Beatles challenge

Cha! I am having so much fun with this challenge, that I am going to extend it to my actual favorite band challenge, which I have found in this group, back from 2015. I have removed some of the prompts, which were repeated and also some, which I know for sure I do not want to read. There are still a lot of challenges left for me.
I will not tick the same book for the same kind of challenge for both Guster and Beatles, if that would be the case, so there is still some repetition left.

Catka | 151 comments There There by Tommy Orange

"Bad Bad World” – Read a book in which the title contains the same word twice
“I’m a Loser” - Read a book in which the main character is an outcast - there was a whole cast of characters and every single one of them was an outcast. And therefore it was also a perfect "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” - Read a tear-jerker or a very depressing book
“Dig It” - Read a book on the NY Times Bestseller List (Feb 10 on Fiction Hardcover list for 14 weeks)

Catka | 151 comments The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by the Swedish author Katarina Bivald

“Two Points for Honesty” – Read a book that someone recommends to you and then tell them what you honestly thought of it - this was chosen by a friend for our book club read, so there is going to be a discussion
“Expectation” – Read a book and if it didn’t meet your expectations, take credit here - it was supposed to be a feel good book, but mostly I just felt bored
“There’s a Place” - Read a book that has a location in the title - so what that it is fictional?!
"All Together Now” - Read one of the group reads or a book club read

message 28: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

“Jesus and Mary” – Read a book that features angels or a rapture/biblical end times - allright, stretching this one a little, but it is unlikely I would come any closer than this. The name of one of the major characters was Angel, but he was behaving so devillishly, it was the end of the world for Tess.
“P.S. I Love You” - Read a book with a subtitle - apparently the subtitle of this book is A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented.
“Eleanor Rigby” - Read a book with a character in the title
“Hello, Goodbye” - Read a book about love gained and love lost AND/OR read a book written by an author who is now deceased - well, both apply actually.

Catka | 151 comments Snuff by Terry Pratchett

"Medicine” – Take a sick day and read a book - I took a day off today and reading was not the primary reason, but it helped me to get through it
“Happier” – Read whatever the fuck you want and take credit for it here - I was unhappy by my previous choices and obligations, so I just went for something certain to make me happier
“Can’t Buy Me Love” - Buy a book and read it immediately
“The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” - Read a book that is part of series

message 30: by Catka (new)

Catka | 151 comments The Crow Road by Iain Banks

“Do You Want to Know a Secret” - Read a book in which a secret is revealed AND/OR a mystery - lots of family secrets in this crazy family - therefore also -
“When I Get Home” - Read a book about home or family dynamics
“Blue Jay Way” - Read a book with birds or the word "bird" or a type of bird in the title

message 31: by Catka (last edited Mar 15, 2019 01:48AM) (new)

Catka | 151 comments The History Man by Malcolm Bradbury - I actually did not finish this one, but I wasted enough time with it to count at least for some prompts here:

“Lost at Sea” – Read a book and if it made it absolutely no sense to you, take credit here - well this surely did not
“Not for Nothing” – Read a book that you know is going to piss you off - I had a feeling that this was going to be the case when I read the summary of the book and unfortunately, I was proven right. The characters were just abominable and especially the main one - Howard was extremely selfish, uncaring and self-centered, leaving just tears and damage in his wake to prove his "self-worth". Also the extreme injustice he was issuing all around him was pissing me off.
“I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party” - Read a book centreing around conformity - Howard was trying so hard to be nonconforming that he was creating his own new conformity around him
“Birthday” - Read a book published in the year of your birth - well, this was the main reason I picked up the book in the first place, but it was not a very good choice after all

“Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey” - read a book that got a big ole secret in it - lots of secrets are uncovered by the end of the book

Catka | 151 comments Oprásgy slovenckej historje. Nádorná enciglopédija (Pictures of Slovak history. National Encyclopedia) by Jaz (cz) - this is a very funny short comics book which makes fun of the Slovak history and is written in a made-up, sorta-slang language
