Want to read my poem Codeine? Want to hear me read it? Sugarhouse Review has a sneak preview of their Winter 2019 issue up at http://www.sugarhousereview.com/curre...

Scroll down a bit to get to me.

Very cool to pair voice with picture in a neat little nugget of verse! Sweet! (a Sugarhouse joke, I fear).

Carol | 10410 comments Ken, wish you could meet her in person. Every bit as sweet as the voice. (Another Sugarhouse joke)

Maybe someday. I never say never. Except for liver and onions, I mean.

(Oh, and Happy New Year, Carol!)

Thanks, you two. This was written some years ago, before codeine started making me deathly ill.

Yes, yes, yes, to liver and onions!

Don't worry, once I retire, I will travel more, and training across the country (with desultory stops along the way) is on my list!

Codeine makes the pain go away, but it still isn’t really gone.

Sharon (sharonstar) | 3392 comments Codeine makes me feel like stones not only in my pocket but everywhere. I don't take it anymore. But narcotics are worse. I'd rather have pain (after surgery) than feel as bad as they can make one feel.

Lovely little verse, and I enjoyed hearing you read it, Ruth.

Sharon (sharonstar) | 3392 comments Ken, stop in Colorado if we are still here! Otherwise, might see you in Maine. We are considering moving there eventually. Not soon.

OK, Sharon. I have a cousin in Denver (and I visited Denver in '81). Maine over Colorado any day of the week. You retain the mountains (though smaller) and pick up an ocean!

Codeine = vomiting for me. Thus, it was one and done when I was 14.

When I wrote this poem, the worst codeine did to me was make me feel like my head wasn't attached to my neck. Now with codeine and all its cohorts I vomit until I think the soles of my shoes are going to come up.

Sewing rocks the pockets ensures that when you jump fully clothed into the Ouse you don't float back up to the surface. I think.
We could have asked Virginia Wolf.
But she was gone quite speechless by the time those children found her body, weeks later, face down in the sand.
