Atlas Shrugged
question
Why does Rearden Lie to Dagny at bridge site about flying to NY.

I'm a long time fan of Rand but one thing I've never got is why Rearden lies to Dagny about flying to NY after giving her the design of the new bridge. This scene happens directly after the bracelet exchange scene. And Dangy realizes he lies later.
I get that he is possibly either mad or still struggling with the barcelet ordeal in this scene but it just doesn't compute. It's not like he doesn't want to be seen in the same place as her. He would justify it under the "it's just work" catergory in his head. He clearly enjoyed the interaction they had at the bridge. And I don't it's that he feels he can't trust himself or dislikes that he's falling for her. There are no events or interactions on the trip he wouldn't want her to see... I can't wrap my head around the motive for him to lie. Even if he didn't want her to join why not just say no vs lie. Please add your thoughts below. What am I missing?

Just rack it up to bad writing. Rand was never good at characterization.
