Mythology, Metaphors, and Morality discussion

There's a great show on Netflix called "Myths and Monsters" that deals with this question. My real-world book group just read Circe by Madeleine Miller, and that very same question (the purpose of mythology) came up in our discussion.

Some could say mythology plays the role that religion did in places that didn’t have a large population. It guided people on ideas of: morality, justice, & more. In some ways it could’ve been seen as hopeful. At least that’s my view.
