John Karr (karr) | 25 comments Welcome. I posted this elsewhere, but the script reads almost as good as Mike McQuay's novelization.

SNAKE
I guess I go in one way or the other. Doesn't mean sh** to me.
Give me the paper.

HAUK
When you come out.

SNAKE
Before.

HAUK
I told you I wasn't a fool, Plissken.

SNAKE
Call me Snake.

You'll note at the end, Hauk calls him Snake and Snake replies, "The name's Plisskin."

This always felt like a Clint Eastwood / Sergio Leone western to me, The Man with No Name (or the Outlaw Josey Wales) transported to a future dystopia. (The presence of Lee Van Cleef certainly helps give me that impression.)

It's sometime hard to remember Ernest Borgnine once won a Best Actor Oscar™; McHale's Navy really redirected his career.

Harry Dean Stanton is always Intense. ;)

Adrienne Barbeau was the regnant TV sexpot for her role in Maude when they cast her in this.

Kivrin | 542 comments But you're leaving off the best part!!!!

"Snake...Snake Plisskin."

"I heard you were dead."

Probably why I enjoyed it so much. Along with Adrienne Barbeau.

Maybe this was the origin of the exchange. I've heard it many times since. I think John Wick had it in the first episode. If not directly, then always asking if he's back in the biz...

The book by McQuay has better back story. Even leading up to the initial Hauk meeting. One of the guards promises a castration session. You can guess Snake's opinion of the dude.

The 'I heard you were dead' line was used in Big Jake a decade earlier. Likely it was old then.

Got ya. A movie version of Hemingway's 'rumor of death greatly exaggerated' thing as well. Probably could find something like it on Mesopotamian stone tablets.
