Why was there a huge decline in space opera in the 2000s?

feafeny Your comment makes zero sense. There are tons of space operas being published. However, your comment about originally is quite ironic considering Mass Effect is a Star Wars carbon copy and Battlestar Galactica re-make from the 70s, which I doubt you're referring to. There is just so much you can do with the genre and author are trying new things. Far from "less creative". The opposite!

If you're referring to KOTOR when you say "Star Wars", then I'd agree with you in terms of game mechanics, not story. If we're referring to the Star Wars films, games, books, etc. collectively, then I'd say that Mass Effect definitely has similarities to Star Wars, but the narratives deliver in ways that Star Wars could've but didn't. Star Wars is very "noble-bright, black/white" with good and evil being clearly defined on the surface, and it had such a potential with Ahsoka and her story that I feel has largely been abandoned in favor of very shallow narratives. Mass Effect, however, has some of the best world-building in video games, with it's writers being unafraid to fully explore the duality of good and evil in each of its characters.
To address the original post, I think what you're seeing is a shift in sci-fi in general, as Hard sci-fi, such as The Expanse, gains popularity. Also, I'm so happy that you like The Expanse, it's one of my favorite series!
