Where we look at someone like Sean and think he should be on top of the world for being alive, inside it’s difficult because his job was so part of his identity. In those moments inside the limo, I think he saw his life to be so much bigger than the part he lost. HE kept Hunter alive and saw how wrecked Khalia was and was reminded of the love he had with Zahra. It was like his own life flashed before him.
That puppy is going to be a lifeline when he experiences those low moments again. Cross did a wonderful job portraying the natural emotions and residual mental injuries these men and women experience beyond the physical.

He was definitely still feeling sorry for himself until the shooting, more contemplative than before but still wallowing. Saving Hunter was that definitive turning point.
