Am I the only one that has trouble picking my next book? There's polls all over Goodreads where people ask others what they should read but that always seems like a bit of work.

So I thought... why not create a thread within our own group?

Come here and enter a few of the books you're considering and let the group help you choose.

Suggestion: try to post a few days before you finish your current read, just to give people time to answer.

Entropia | 283 comments Cool idea, for now I sorta know what to read, but I often have difficulties choosing.

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments Ooh, this is fun. Here are some of my options. Please pick my next book for me:

Unsheltered
The Three-Body Problem
The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century
Next Year in Havana

I am currently reading The Silence of the Girls and Little Women, and listening to On the Come Up. In case that helps with recommendations.

I haven't read any of these yet but I vote for Next Year in Havana because that's the one I most want to read from your list! I have heard mixed reviews on Unsheltered so that one has slid down my TBR.

Well that is a fun list I a few added to my TBR.

I have not read any of them but think The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century sounded most interesting.

I vote for [book:Next Year in Havana
. I finished it last week and enjoyed it.

I'm currently reading On the Come Up, and I need help picking my next pick.

For some reason, I'm on a YA kick from the library, so my options are:
One of Us Is Lying
Five Feet Apart
What If It's Us

Kathy E | 3307 comments Emily wrote: "I'm currently reading On the Come Up, and I need help picking my next pick.

Those look good, Emily. If I were still a YA librarian, I'd choose
One of Us Is Lying. It'd be fun to booktalk to teenagers.

message 9: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments So two votes for Next Year in Havana and one vote for The Feather Thief so far. I will report back on what I pick once I finish my current book.

Emily, I wish I could help but I have not read any of those.

message 10: by Entropia (new)

Entropia | 283 comments Milena, I vote for The Three-Body Problem, I heard a lot of good things about it.

Emily, YA is not my cup of cake, but I like Five Feet Apart cover ;)

message 11: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Emily, I felt a little 'meh' about One of Us is Lying despite the positive reviews. And the "meet-cute" in the description for What if It's Us is a little much for me :P So my vote is for Five Feet Apart.

Milena, I've heard great things about Next Year in Havana so my vote is for that one.

As for my own choices, I currently have these checked out at the library:

There There by Tommy Orange
The Witch Elm by Tana French
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

Any recommendations?

message 13: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
Laura, I have all of those on my TBR, but I'm most excited about There There, so I say go with that one! (I'm saving it for the indigenous prompt... curse reading in order!)

Wow, I liked all of those a lot. I will also say There There. It's the shortest by far and will leave you time to read the other books.

I don't know about the other two, but There There is excellent!

There, There sounds like a good bet. I hope to fit it in somewhere this year.

message 17: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments Laura - I recommend There, There, also! I read it in January and really enjoyed it.

message 18: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments I'm reading There There right now and I will also recommend it. It's really good so far and even though it may be short, the characters are very well developed.

message 19: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments Thanks for the help everyone! I started reading Next Year in Havana yesterday and I like it so far.

message 20: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Well the votes were pretty convincing so I started There There. I've only read the prologue but it's good so far :)

Emily, did you know that Five Feet Apart is going to be a movie? I saw a Facebook ad this morning. It's very strange to see Jughead in a different role since I watch him so much on Riverdale

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6472976/...

message 21: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
Yes! That's part of the reason I want to read it -- my book-to-movie friend is forcing me to read it before we go watch it in theaters. We see every movie adaptation when it comes out haha!

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments My reading in order plan has gone out of the window (whoops) because of library holds coming at the wrong time. I've got four to pick up tomorrow:

The Song of Achilles
Acorna's Quest
A Curse So Dark and Lonely
The Winter Witch

Which do you think I should read first?

message 23: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 426 comments Hard one Sarah....I’ve only read Song of Achilles out of those even though I have been meaning to check out Acorna. Song of Achilles is great though.

message 24: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments Acorna is really good.

message 25: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments The Song of Achilles is so good. I have never even heard of the other three, so maybe I am not the best person to offer you an opinion.

message 26: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
Song of Achilles is my vote!

message 27: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 907 comments I have just taken out 3 books from the library, all of which would fit for the NY Public Library recommendation. The three books are all very different from each other. They are:
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren Lab Girl
Plainsong (Plainsong, #1) by Kent Haruf Plainsong
Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay Bad Feminist

Which one should I read?

Lab Girl, it's really interesting.

I haven't read any of them, but Lab Girl seems really interesting!

message 30: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments Lab Girl can also be used for the STEM prompt, if you haven't filled that one yet.

message 31: by Entropia (new)

Entropia | 283 comments @Sarah, my vote goes to Song of Achilles
@Lizzy, Lab Girl looks most interesting to me

message 32: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 907 comments Such consensus! Thank you all.

message 33: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments @Sarah- I agree with Song of Achilles
@Lizzy- I agree with Lab girl

Here are mine:

I just started There There but I also picked up The Chalk Man and The Mars Room from the library ( STILL waiting on my hold for My Sister, the Serial Killer- I think they forgot about me??)

What order should I read in? I must be held accountable LOL...they're due back on the 25th.

I say continue with There There, unless it's not really grabbing you. I haven't read the others.

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Thanks guys. I started The Song of Achilles and I really like it so far

message 36: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
There There is definitely quick, immersive read so I would finish that one before anything else. It also has so many storylines that I know I would have gotten confused if I had tried side reads.

As far as the other two, I liked The Chalk Man. I didn't find it as revolutionary as it's been made out to be but a good, easy thriller with some good nostalgia.

Thanks Laura.

I'm only 63 pages into There There. I started it for the read a thon but then needed a break during the last weekend. I'm definitely going to finish it first. I was inclined to pick up Chalk Man next. I've heard a lot of good reviews. Pretty sure whatever I do , Im going to end up having to renew a few. I have a lot of things I've been procrastinating on ...

message 38: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments Got these from the library within the last few days, and I really can't decide. Which one should I read next?

The Winter of the Witch
Daisy Jones & The Six

message 39: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
I haven't read either, but I'd say Daisy Jones because it's so popular right now that you may run into spoilers if you wait too long lol

message 40: by Tracy (last edited Mar 26, 2019 05:44AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I'm gonna agree with Emily , although Im dying to read both and really want to start The Bear and The Nightingale so I can through the trilogy, I've seen nothing but AMAZING reviews for Daisy Jones.

I loved Lab Girl. I haven't read your other options.

message 43: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments I have the following books checked out from the library:
Come Find Me
Mr. Kiss and Tell (I actually started this as an audiobook a while ago but I didn't like the woman reading it)
Courting Darkness
The Winter of the Witch (ok this is stupid but I don't like the cover so ever since I checked it out and brought it home, I've lost interest)
Golden State

I'm currently reading The Old Drift. Which of the above should I start next?

message 44: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments My opinion is going to be biased, since only 2 of the books are on my TBR. And I haven't read either of them. But I will say The Winter of the Witch. And I hope it's great, I just did not like the second book nearly as much as the first.

message 45: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1060 comments I read Mr. Kiss and Tell a few years ago and loved it, but I'm a huge Veronica Mars fan so I'm prejudiced. If you enjoy the show, you'll definitely enjoy the book. If not, I'm not sure.

Oh, my library had a pretty cover for The Winter of the Witch. Must be the UK/US difference! I think you should go with that if you can get past the cover.

I didn't realize The Bear and the Nightingale was a trilogy (I haven't read it yet, but I have it as an option for a few different prompts), so that's cool to know.

I need help picking a book for the NY Public Library prompt. My options are:

Sadie
Yes Please
Heart Berries
My Dear Hamilton: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton
The Great Believers
Fates and Furies

So many good options.. how do I choose? (Spoiler: I don't choose. You do.)

I've only read Fates and Furies and Yes Please. I loved Fates and Furies, but a lot of people hate it. It elicits strong reactions. I love Amy Poehler, but I never find celebrity memoirs as funny as I want to. If I were picking for myself out of the others, I think I would go with My Dear Hamilton.

message 49: by Milena (new)

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments Emily, are you reading in order? I am saving NYPL prompt for towards the end, when it gets harder to find books, since there are so many options.

message 50: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
I am reading in order! I was getting tired of heavy books, but I chose The Little Paris Bookshop for the reading prompt, so I'll be ok with a heavier book for next week!
