Nora Briggs (abriggman) | 433 comments Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler , I purchased this book for a $1 at dollar tree, it is a delightful read.
Please share good books you found, low cost, and were a good read.

Hayley | 4 comments I found a website that has cheap books so I got $150 worth of books for only $30 (some of these were hardcovers), from that order I got 8 books and loved them all.

You can't throw out a tease like that without sharing the website.

Kerri | 711 comments I am a sucker for library book sales - the books cost practically nothing, so I tend to pick up basically whatever catches my eye! Some are total clunkers and I get rid of them, but some have been really awesome!

Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt: a book for teens about a girl who breaks up with her boyfriend after finding out he has a "wife" in an online game. So she decides to live like she is in the 1960's (no internet, computer, cellphone, dresses in 1960's style, she goes all out) for a bit to imagine what it was like to live when life was "simpler". A fun, quick read, coming-of-age.

Dog Boy by Eva Hornung: a two-year old (?) is abandoned by his family in Russia. He joins a pack of wild dogs and is raised by them. Pretty dark so I don't recommend it a whole lot, but very strong writing and an extremely interesting look at humanity vs nature, what makes a family/home, etc.

Varjak Paw by S. F. Said: Basically an intermediate chapter book about ninja cats. It has a surprisingly dark villain, but made me laugh a lot. I am still looking for its sequel.

Also, when I hear "Hidden Gems", I think of books that aren't well-known, or that I come across by chance. If this goes against the theme of the thread, please let me know, but here are some lesser-known books that I found amazing, or well-reviewed books I came across purely by chance:

The Witch Must Die: The Hidden Meaning of Fairy Tales by Sheldon Cashdon: This is a non-fiction book talking about the lessons of fairy tales and why the villains always die such gruesome, violent deaths. I found it fascinating, though I don't agree with all the viewpoints, I thought it was well constructed and presented. I came across this one when I worked at a temporary book store for a summer. (513 Goodreads ratings)

The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle: A ghost story made into a movie in the 40's. Really fun, interesting characters, and an intriguing mystery. The ending was a little anticlimactic but I thought it worked well. I found this one through another book group. (731 Goodreads ratings)

The Plover by Brian Doyle: A different book than any I have ever come across before, it is written basically in one voice - as if someone was telling you a story and doing voices for everyone else. The other voices have their own flair, but it is still the narrator voice underlying it all. A very quiet book about a man who is fed up and goes to sail the ocean by himself for a bit to get away from everyone, but then takes on an interesting assortment of passengers. Interesting characters, spurts of amazing beauty between the quiet. My mom recommended this book to me. (1,427 Goodreads ratings)

The First Wife: A Tale of Polygamy by Paulina Chiziane: Written by the first published female author from Mozambique. Incredibly strong, beautiful prose, fascinating and very human characters, and so much to think about and discuss with others if anyone else ever read this book! I read this for the Around the World Challenge and wow, the whole challenge was worth it for getting me to read this one book. It is definitely a "Hidden Gem" from the world with only 303 Goodreads ratings!
