Our historical Scotland group read for March and April is...

At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen

Set in WWII Scotland and a hunt for good auld Nessie - looking forward to reading this one!

This is a general thread, to see who’s reading, where they’re up to in the book, first thoughts etc. If you write something here that might give something away, please use the spoiler HTML. However, I’ll create a Spoiler thread/topic for those who have finished, where you can chat freely about the whole book, plot twists, and all! :)

Elliot | 51 comments I'm going to pass on this one, but I hope you all enjoy it. I have to admit, I'm a little miffed that a non-fiction book wasn't chosen for this historical group read. But that's just me.

I think that was an oversight on my part, later in the year we can have a non-fiction category.

If you fancy trying a fictional book sometime, you might enjoy the Joseph Knight book that was nominated, it’s well researched and also tackles the Jacobite war and its after effects in some of the story. I think Alan is reading it too. Just a suggestion, we’ll definitely do non-fiction in the future :)

Elliot | 51 comments Thanks, Ellen. I hope I didn’t come across as petulant.

Haha, as soon as you said it I realised my mistake! :)

Susan I read this a long tie ago. I am going to have to go back and read my review.

My library luckily has this book, so I’ll get it in there, but I’ve had a peek online. The book is £7.74 as a paperback on both Amazon and Waterstones, and is going for £1.99 on Kindle...

If you find it cheaper online, or prices differ in another country, please comment below!

(It won’t show me Audible prices as it’s offering me a free trial - annoying!)

Alan M Ellen, and for anyone has access to ebay in the UK - lowest price I see is £2.65 (and free p&p). Second hand, of course, but I pick up a lot of cheap books this way.

message 10: by Susan (new)

Susan I am a devoted second hand fan.

Donald Leitch | 47 comments I picked up a copy at the book store today. I need to finish my current read, Ali Smith’s Winter, then At the Water’s Edge.

Good tip!

Kirk (goodreadscomkirkc) | 114 comments Despite certain elements I mentioned in the spoiler thread, I did find this one an engaging read. 3.75-4.

message 14: by Susan (new)

Susan I gave this 3 stars and my review mentions that it contains 3 unlikable characters.

Anyone else heard of drawer porridge? I asked my Mum, who remembers being told about WWII by various family members, and she definitely had heard of sliced porridge, but not porridge kept in a drawer - maybe a Scottish thing?

Tarissa (inthebookcase) | 39 comments I did read this one! Will share my review over in my list.

Excited to find out what the next group read is.
