What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions [Mar 5, 2019]

I missed this thread being created. Read the book in 3 pieces over the past week. Enjoyed it immensely... glad Anni suggested the BR...
I kinda wish the book just continued forever...
Here's the comments I made on Discord while waiting for the thread:
(view spoiler)
I finished this this morning: (view spoiler)
The recurring joke in the unanswered questions, where questioners are asking uncomfortable questions for a friend, or they need to know by Friday is hilarious... but did they really say that or did Munroe add that?

I have no idea why, but I think the questions were in a different order in my edition...
1. Global Storm - 5 Stars
A great start, (view spoiler)
2. Random-Sneeze-Call - 3.5 Stars
It was funny and I liked the statistic, but it wasn't really special...
3. Cooling pond/ fuel cooling? - 5 Stars
Great answer and I really liked (view spoiler)
4. New York Time Machine - 3 Stars
I liked the part about the future, the past part was a little too long for my liking
5. Soulmates - 4 Stars
6. Laserpointer - 5 Stars
I loved, that he didn't stopped after answering what would happen if everyone would use a red laserpointer, but continued and everything became more and more absurd :)
7. Periodic Table - 5 Stars
Also one of my favourites
8. Everyone jump - 4 Stars
It was really cool, how he changed the direction of the question!
9. Hairdryer - 3.5 Stars
It wasn't bad, but again I liked most of the other questions way more...
10. Last Light - 3.5 Stars
Same
11. Machine gun- jetpack - 5 Stars
Loved the "Don't try that at home"- Warning :D
12. Steady Rise - 4 Stars
A short, but enjoyable one :)
13. Submarine in Space - 5 Stars
One of the best examples how seriously he answers more or less stupid questions :)
14. Short Answers - 5 Stars
(Printing Money, nuke in a hurricane, naming all the stars, C4 attached to a boomerang [seriously?? :D], rainpipe-generators, riding a bike when it's cold outside)
I loved all of them :)
15. Lightning - 4.5 Stars
The informative part at the beginning was great and the questions as well
16. Human Computer - 4 Stars
My favourite part was the beginning with the picture of the child and the cat and the different ways to interpret it
17. Small Planet - 4.5 Stars
18. Dropping a Steak - 5 Stars :)
19. Ice hockey puck - 4 Stars
(view spoiler)
20. Avoiding a Cold - 5 Stars
Great Question :) In a lecture about immunology, I asked myself a similar question, but then also thought "Naaah, that wouldn't work...", still great to read a more detailed answer
21. Half full/empty glass - 4.5 Stars
22. Alien astronomers - 3 Stars
23. Lost DNA - 5 Stars
I really liked, that this was even a little creepy! :)
I don't trust my phone, so I splitt my updates into more than one comment 😅
#1: Reminds me of Mistborn
#2: loved the random things, like the chance of calling a serial killer, or someone else trying to catch a sneezer...
#5: I loved how it basically devolved into the current system of finding love... with websites and such...
#6: this really cemented the Mythbusters vibe...
#8: went total zombie apocalypse, lol...
#11: typical anti-lawsuit warning... people are crazy...
#13: Yea... and finds ways to make it work, somehow...
#15: Didn't he talk about ants at some point?... reminded me of Children of Time
#21: One of my favorites, as well... I think I laughed out loud at how different a half empty glass and a half full glass reacted...
#23: Suitably creepy... I expected this to go somewhere weird immediately, from the premise...

Again a rather absurd, but really interesting question!

If not for the Answer alome, but for the two little stories about Larry Walters and the Airport and Randall vs. Wolfram :D
27. All humans removed from earth - 3 Stars
28. Self-fertilization - 4 Stars
Maybe I would have liked it more if I hadn't known the answer before even reading it 😅

Uuuh, I still need to google the blood shooting toad!!!
30. Deadly neutrinos - 3.5 Stars
31. Braking hill - 3.5 Stars

I want a pool full of cotton-candy as well! Right now!

38. Twitter - 3 Stars
39. LEGO- Bridge - 4 Stars
Again, I really liked how detailed this amswer was!
40. Longest sundown - 3.5 Stars

No, it's not part of the question, most of the time it's shown as speaking bubble in the illustration below the question
Me and Anni are reusing this thread for
I re-read chapter 1... this book is just absurd/cheaty, and I don't have too much to say about it...
Chapter 2, tho, I really loved... just everything about it... including the revelation that chapter 3 is about digging a hole, lol...
(view spoiler)
Gonna continue with chapter 3 soon...["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Chapter 1: Iiked it, but didn't love it... I don't know judging by the title I expected something different, I liked the scientific bits, but (view spoiler)
Chapter 2: Also my favorite so far! Great question and a really interesting and funn, answer, I loved the part about the study, sometimes the things happening in real life/being examined are far better than anything you could come up as a joke :)
Chapter 3: This one was great too, but maybe not as good as the second chapter :) (view spoiler)
Chapter 4:
(Edit:I meant Chapter 5...)
I think I've read most of that chapter as well, it's how to land an airplane, right? Or was there one chapter in between? I left my bag including the book in my car and it's faaaaar too late to venture out into the cold 😅 I guess I should restart this chapter anyway, as I was not quite half asleep vut maybe a third as I read it... But I really liked how seriously the man took the questions and answered everything. Again a great chapter
The easiest way to find an old discussion thread is to go to the book page... down at the bottom is a list of all discussions focused around that book (assuming the thread doesn't bug out and delete the book link at the top)... then just look for a name you recognize (Scott/Jenna/Niki/Angela/Margret usually) and you're there... can also just do it when you want to find a discussion about a book you just read and loved :)

But the day I came here to comment I saw something else (not even sure which thread it was...), afterwards I knee that I wanted to do something but couldn't remember what it was...

Chapter 5: I've read the beginning of the chapter again. Not the best, but a really great chapter. While reading I was wondering how Munroe came up with all the questions. (view spoiler) and as I said before I really liked how seriously the questions were answered :)
Chapter 6: I liked this one as well and finally we ventured into the "destroy everyrhing around us"-area with all the (view spoiler)
How are you doing?
Chapter 3 felt like it was over barely after it began... listening to 4 now...
I'm catching up now... been doing a bunch of series completions the last couple days for Iain Smedry...

I've been doing a terrible job of reading this in small doses, and instead seem to be doing it in medium bursts
I definitely agree that Chapter 2 has been the strongest early chapter...
Chapters 3 & 4 just seemed too short... Chapter 5 had a bunch of interesting quests/scenarios, but again I kinda wanted more...
I think I started Chapter 6 before stopping last week, but need to restart it when I continue...
I also need to see if I can find a .cue file to break my audiobook into chapters for easier rollbacks...

Failure on the cue file front.... too bad you're doing physical on this, or I could get the info from you :)
A .cue file is just how mp4s are split into legible chapters... they look like this:
(view spoiler)
You can also use them to break a big mp3 file into smaller track/chapter files. Just change the TITLE "text" and the INDEX WW XX:YY:ZZ, where WW=source track, XX = minutes, YY = seconds, and ZZ = milliseconds, for real accuracy...
If I could have gotten track lengths from you (or someone else listening) I could have made a 99% accurate split with my mp3 converter and mp3 splitter software...

Looking at that CUE file for a Gail Carriger novella I just shared, I think some of those chapters are "fake"... as in the acknowledgements/etc... "This is Audible" "Randomhouse Audio presents How to Marry a Werewolf, a Claw & Courtship Novella, written by Gail Carriger, Performed by XYZ" "Book Blurb" "Prologue"
This is how so many of my chapter headings get screwed up in BR discussions...

We don't need to rush at all, I like to have this one as a side read and read a few chapters whenever I have the time and we're at the same point again.

Aaand the german audiobooks are devided horribly in general, most of the time I've got at least twice as many chapters as they actually are... Really confusing if I'm trying to mention the chapter in a BR...
I remember some First Law World books skewing over time, because the prologue was called chapter 1, then some 15 second interludes were included as their own chapters...
Finally restarted... hope you don't mind... the first couple chapters still put a smile on my face, even on 2nd/3rd read... the chapters seem to get more ridiculous as they go... the logistics of lava moats, etc...
I'm approaching halfway, probably gonna finish the rest today... at this point, we've dragged this book out for nearly 6 months (from my first attempt to read) :D

I stumbled on to that previous book link the other day, and thought it sounded like it was in a similar vein to these books... another webcomic writer writing a science-y book... this time with his college professor wife...
And on the topic of this book, I DIDN'T finish it... I listened to about 66% and started zoning out... so I'll wait for you, and probably go back to around 50% and continue :)
I didn't retain much past my last spoiler, anyway, and got confused when the word Epilogue was said, when the ToC said there were 10-15 concepts/chapters to go... turns out, there are just 2 consecutive companion chapters, I think, involving Earth & Mars or the Moon...

Part 1: 24th MAR
- Jump very high
- Poolparty
- dig a hole
Part 2: 26th MAR
- play the piano
- emergency landing
- cross a river
Part 3: 28th MAR
- master a move
- keep your home from moving
- lava pit (sounds really promising!)
Part 4: 30th MAR
- throw things
- play football
- weather forecast
Part 5: 1st APR
- play catch
- skiing
- send a package
Part 6: 3rd APR
- power the house (earth)
- power the house (mars)
- find friends
Part 7: 5th APR
- send data
- charge your phone
- take a selfie
Part 8: 7th APR
- catch a drone
- 90s kid
- win a vote
Part 9: 9th APR
- decorate a tree
- travel fast
- be punctual
- recycle this book

Again, the first chapter wasn't my favourite but I really liked the next two chapters, especially the second one :) But I have nothing to add to my old update.
Will start Part 2 now :)

I'll probably wait and rush through my re-read, once you reach a new-to-you chapter :)
Cause I doubt I'll have anything to say about the first 6ish chapters...
Think that means tomorrow...

Part 2: 26th MAR
- play the piano --> o.k.
- emergency landing --> I really liked that one and how seriously the pilot-guy took everything and that he answered all the questions
- cross a river --> I liked this one, as specially as we reached the teapots :)
Part 3: 28th MAR
- master a move --> don't liked that one very much
- keep your home from moving --> o.k.
- lava pit --> liked, but didn't loved it... in the end, I don't think I can afford my own lava pit at home...

I finally started, and re-read the first 5 chapters... after hearing them for a 3rd time, I almost know them by heart, I feel like...
Continue more tomorrow, and hopefully reach new-to-me chapters...
Continue more tomorrow, and hopefully reach new-to-me chapters...

- throw things -> I liked this one, it was a bit more normal, like you could actually use the formulas, vecause throwing things is a bit more realistic than building a pool made of cheese :D
- play football -> Haha, this again was one chapter where we drifted away from the original topic, but I feel better knowing how to best ride through orks than knowing how to play football :D
- weather forecast -> This one was a bit shorter (I think) but pretty cool. I especially liked the explanation of the saying.
Part 5: 1st APR
- play catch -> ok, but not that special
- skiing -> not my favorite, but I liked it :)
- send a package -> for me definitely the best out of the three, I really enjoyed all the small space-knowledge-bits
Part 6: 3rd APR
- power the house (earth) -> ok, but as most of the facts are more or less common knowledge, it wasn't that exciting...
- power the house (mars) -> ...that one was better, but still not as entertaining as other chapters
- find friends -> I liked the "take-home-message", but all in all it was a rather average chapter.
Part 7: 5th APR
- send data -> ok, I liked the facts about the butterflies, but otherwise it was quite similar to one ot the what if chapters...
- charge your phone -> maybe no real tricks or "life-hacks" but I liked it
- take a selfie -> pretty cool chapter! It wasn't so much on the funny side, but quite informative. I necer thought about most of the aspects and I had to rethink what he's talking about for a moment there, but I liked it, especially the first half
I read through to Chapter 12 this morning, and just feel like something is missing from this book, in general, that made the first book quite magical... maybe it was just the novelty?
I agree that the weather one was a quite good one...

Chapter 1 / Jumping: Interesting, but mostly about cheating... I cheat most of the time, when I have to jump these days... mostly I jump when I need to scan a barcode that's 8-10 feet in the air (I can reach about 7 feet with my arms, I think)... so I usually grab the pallet near where I'm trying to scan in the reserve steel and pull/jump up and wave the scanner around :D
Chapter 2 / Pool: This was one of my favorite chapters the first (2) time(s) around... it just has so many memorable facts/ideas... the flooding, the water bottles, the nukes, etc etc etc... I feel like it's chapters like this that spurred the idea for the book... some of the others just feel like filler, at times...
Chapter 3 / Digging: Leads really well off of chapter 2... and I like the facts about Pirate treasure, altho I think I vaguely knew them before this book... and that Canadian money pit...
Chapter 4 / Pianos: I find pianos interesting, but this chapter just kinda goes off the rails, and is really about what humans/animals can hear... so I'll go off the rails and mention how I like watching imgur/reddit videos of people playing creative music... timing cupboard door slamming to famous drum solos, squeeky ovens to Lil' Jon beats, using glass painos or water filled glasses and trash to play music... it's all great...
Chapter 5 / Landing: Like you, my favorite part of this is that an expert was called... and the info about how people don't just crash off the back of aircraft carriers all the time... but I feel like this chapter is just giving the makers of Fast & the Furious ideas for the next movie, lol :D
Chapter 6 / River: Some chapters, just make me think "would anyone seriously think of these ideas, if they weren't writing a book?"... I mean... I need to cross a river, let's freeze the whole thing...
Chapter 7 / Moving: I liked this chapter, mostly for the talk about moving entire houses... I dunno what it's like in Europe, but in the US, there are these cookie cutter rectangular houses that you sometimes see being transported on trucks/trailers on the highway... they tend to be long and thin, and sometimes you need to connect 2 at the destination, if you want a more square house...
Chapter 8 / Not Moving: Some of these chapters fit so well together, I barely notice a new chapter has started... the science of tectonics was great, here... altho I felt a bit angry at the government at the end... most people can't afford to fix moving houses, I don't think...
EDIT: Accidentally posted this early... typing the rest now...

I actually don't have much more to say, at the moment...
Chapter 9 / Lava: want to re-listen to this one
Chapter 10 / Throwing: This one felt like a Mythbuster episode about Washington's throw... but I guess you could find a Mythbuster origin for most of these chapters...
Chapter 11 / Football: I'll just re-listen to this one, too...
Chapter 12 / Weather: Like I said (inadequately) before... I really liked the weather chapter... I find myself checking the weather more, the past couple years (including the long-term charts that are really just historical averages)... so this chapter, which basically explained meteorology, was great...
I'd say I already had fair knowledge about sunsets/sunrises, why they color, how they color... old rhymes attaching the color to the weather tomorrow... but it wasn't bad... and I liked the new rhymes he made involving social media :D

Re Chapter 2: I agree!
Re Chapter 4: Sounds cool, so what's your favourite?
Re Chapter 6: Well... I guess humanity has done stuff way more stupid.
Re Chapter 7: I think it's far, far less common here. I wouldn't say those type of houses don't exist here, because somewhere I guess they do, but in general houses over here are way more solid and un-move-able. On TV I saw such a house moving in America once and also some of those house renovating projects, it's funny how different these buildings sometimes are.
Our house is an older one and as we bought it, one of the walls was damaged, so we had to remove the whole wall and let craftsman build a new one. Believe me, even damaged, this stupid wall (mostly stone and some wood) was really hard to remove and transport to the container for removal.

Chapter 22, catch a drone:
I really liked that he again asked experts for their opinions and that Serena Williams even created her own reallife study :) I also liked the bit in the note of thanks at the end about this chapter. that he thanked them for killing a drone in the name of science and that the robot expert said it was ok to do so.
Chapter 23, 90s kid:
This was more interesting than I thought it would be judging by the title. Not sure if my german edition has am altered list of names, but it was pretty accurate. I also liked the bit about the TV show friends.
Chapter 24, win a vote:
Not my favourite, but not to bad eigher. How extreme that these one guy changed his name in Znoneofthe Above, I'm not even sure he could have done something like that over here.
Chapter 25, decorate a tree:
Well... we doesn't even learned how to decorate a tree. The chapter was ok, I liked the little story about the guy "killing" the beloved old tree to get to know his exact age, but otherwise I was a bit bored.
Chapter 26, travel fast:
Interesting topic, but a bit too long for my taste. I laughed about the twist that you could reach your dentist in 10 seconds but that you will just rush through his surgery if you do so.
Chapter 27, be punctual:
Sad but true, I tend to be late... Not by much, most of the time only 2-15 minutes, but I hate the idea that others have to wait for me (or that I missed my train in the morning) and I know it's a bad habbit, but despite all good intentions it still happens again and again. I don't think those tipps will help me tho :D But I do think it's kind of interesting how flexible the time zones actually are.
Chapter 28, recycle this book:
it was ok, but I hadn't the feeling that I learned something new or that it was really funny
It was really cool to read it with you tho :) So thank you, especially for being patient with me I guess...
I'll try to finish (and respond) this week :)
Maybe then we can do the next Skulduggery we mentioned doing 3 weeks ago :D

Yeah I was about to ask you if we should wait for Virginie or just continue because it don't think if we wait we would continue anytime soon 😅
