This is the thread where you can ask questions and we will post an FAQ in the next message of this thread as questions are answered.
Many questions related to tasks can be found here. You should also check the FAQ in the next post before posting a new question

FAQ

◈Q: If you cross into a player category above yours for month three, how does that work when you were in a lower category for month one and two? (i.e. does the needing to read for the requirements for the higher category work retroactively?)
◈A: I think doing the maths it has to.
Moral of the story... If your reading is on the cusp of one of the categories, it is a good idea to read for the requirements of the category above
(and maybe read a few extra smaller books if you need to push yourself into that category!)

◈Q: For the tautogram, do the words 'the' and 'a' count? What about an ampersand?
◈A: The/A is ok.
"&" doesn't count but "and" does

◈Q: What is the difference between a Greek and a Olympian God?
◈A:You can use this site for the list of the 12 Olympian gods. You will see a full list of gods here which you can use for Greek Gods (except those listed as Olympian obviously)

◈Q: For title with "The Chariot" in the title can I use The Charioteer?
◈A: Charioteer would not be acceptable for Chariot as it is changing the meaning of the word. Generally only plurals can be used

◈Q: For Main Genre romance would Romance > M M Romance work?
◈A: Yes, where the main genre is listed (even if there is then a subcategory), that is ok

◈Q: what is a tautogram?
◈A: Let Google be your friend :). Here is the wiki entry

◈Q: is the spreadsheet the only place i need to log my read books?
◈A: Other than marking as read on your goodreads shelf? Yes 😀

◈Q: For the bonus task, are those books a task on their own or can we use a book we've read for a different task and count it towards the bonus?
◈A: No, every task has to be separate books

◈Q:For the March bonus task, the spreadsheet gave me points even though I have only read one of the books. I tried putting in a second to see what happened, and it gave me a second 250 point
◈A: For that one please use the "March Bonus" and "March Bonus 2" as the tasks. The formula isn't sophisticated enough to know when you have read both, so it will give you points when "March Bonus" is read.

◈Q:For the task to read a book where a character's name is also a word, does it have to be the first name? Or can it be the last name if that's what they go by?
◈A:Yes, either is fine

◈Q: I finished a book on April 1 Australian time, but that was still March 31 for me. What date do I use on the spreadsheet?
◈A: It is fine to use your time or GR time.

◈Q: Can "ger" also be used for "Read a book with the word "yurt" in the text"? Ger is the Mongolian word of which yurt is the Russian/Turkic form
◈A: Yes

◈Q: where can I find pet names?
◈A: try this challenge for ideas: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and the previous version here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

◈Q: Does a country that lies partially in both hemispheres count, such as Colombia?
◈A: any countries listed in that link including the “partial” ones count

◈Q: If I start a book in April, but finish it in May, is that allowed? will it count as a May book?
◈A: Yes, provided books are started after the challenge began, the read date is what counts

◈Q: Read a book where someone is described as having a Type A Personality. Does it need to state that wording exactly?

◈A: The task does not have to have the specific wording, but the character should be described as someone with tendencies as per wikipedia.
Which is "competitive, highly organized, ambitious, impatient, highly aware of time management and/or aggressive"

◈Q:What is the minimum page requirement?
◈A: 100 pages

◈Q:Would the names of individual flowers (daisy, orchid, rose etc.) count as spring words?
◈A: Yes

◈Q; How do I volunteer to write discussion questions for the Book of the Months (BOM's) ?
◈A: You go to the BOM thread and make a comment that you would like to volunteer for discussion questions. If there are more volunteers than discussion days than we use a randomizer. If you aren't chosen to write DQ's but still read the book and participate you will still collect the points for that task.

◈Q: Are re-reads allowed?
◈A: Yes, as long as its been 6 months or more

◈Q: Read a book with 3 O's in the title, those O's have to be the first letter of non-article words? Or can the O's be anywhere?
◈A: For O's, they can be anywhere in the title. But it has to be title, not subtitle

◈Q: What constitutes a "spring " word?
◈A: lamb / chick / Easter/ March / April / May / green / yellow / egg / flower / birth / hatch/new/awakening
things around new growth & birth & vigorous life

◈Q: Can we disregard articles " A", "The" ?
◈A: yes

◈Q: For the bonus question, does the author have to be born in Canada, or can they be a Canadian citizen and be listed as Canadian, even if born in another country?

◈A: The author has to be born in Canada.

◈Q: does the red & white cover have to be only red and white, or can it also have black?
◈A: The red and white cover is to represent the Canadian Flag which is only red and white so no other colors allowed for this task.

◈Q: Does the buddy read have to be ONLY two people reading? Or can more join if they want?
◈A: More may join ; its not limited to only two people reading

◈Q:So for the buddy read one, you only get points if you are the one to suggest the BR and not just participating?
◈A: It was a great idea but not a feasible one for everyone to suggest a buddy read and find someone to read with; so we are amending this task to :
Suggest a book or join a buddy read starting on / after 21 April and read with a buddy - or new buddies
**** This task won't be reworded on your spreadsheets

◈Q: #11 Shakespearean names. Is it restricted to only those from A-K?
◈A: Yes to make it easier for players and mods we are sticking to the list

◈Q:And what if you suggest a buddy read but no one joins
◈A: Its not a buddy read if no one joins. Suggest another book.
The revised task is contingent on suggesting and reading a book with a buddy(ies) OR joining and reading a book with a buddy(ies)

◈Q: For the task to read a book where a character has the same name as you, do alternate spellings count?
I am Carrie. The character in my book is Kerry.
◈A:Sure that works Carrie; ( it's not a 100 pt task and it' s Easter weekend...feeling generous:D)

◈Q: Is exact spelling required for the popular girls names from Spain? Example Sylvia for Silvia or Chloe for Cloe?
◈A: Yes, that is fine as it's not a 100 pt task.

Allegra | 219 comments I don't see where we sign up. With a very busy next couple of weeks, I don't want to miss the sign-up, but when I just called up the main page for this challenge, it said it was closed to new comments.
Is it only me?

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12860 comments Are the tasks coming soon? I finished the book I was reading, and want to know if I am safe to read the one I have lined up, or whether I'll need to save it for a task, lol!

Hi all
Sorry, Laura had some unexpected commitments over the weekend and has to attend to some important family business. I’ll get together the tasks etc over the next day

Laura is back and between her, Karen and Tea... Tasks are up (a tab on the master leaderboard sheet) and individual spreadsheets are almost done!

message 11: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Master leaderboard sheet seems like it’s still locked? I tried the “request access” method. Hopefully that is an okay way to go about doing this.

Thanks Mods for all your hard work!

message 12: by Laura (last edited Mar 18, 2019 05:54PM) (new)

Laura | 9707 comments You won't be able to access the master spreadsheet but the individual spreadsheets ( your own) are almost unlocked. Just a few left to do.

Edit: Access granted to Bloom, Bud and Daffodil category players

I think what she means is we can't view the master yet.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Dumb question about the BOM task: I normally don't do BOM books. But the adult one sounds good and my library has it so how do I volunteer to ask a question? And when would I have to ask this question? I also know that this is wear I will lose a lot of points so I might at well attempt one if it interests me.

message 22: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments and nice on the flowers counting as Spring words. I happen to have 2 of those lined up.

message 23: by Laura (new)

message 24: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Thank you. I didn't see anything about rereads. OK as long as it's been longer than a certain amount of time? (the book I'm thinking off, it's been years since I read it)

message 25: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12860 comments I think it was 6 months last time. I have a personal 5 year rule that trumps it, so I'm safe, lol.

message 26: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Minimum page requirement is 100 pages

message 27: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Sammy is correct; if it's been 6 months or more then rereads are allowed

message 28: by Allegra (new)

Allegra | 219 comments Two questions, just to clarify:
>With the Upside Down challenge, books had to be at least 100 pages, even if they were "adult." Is that true again? I think there was an option of combining short stories/novellas as well.
>As the months change, is the "21st" for the earlier or later month? In other words, do books finished on April 21 count as Month 1 or Month 2?

message 29: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Allegra wrote: "As the months change, is the "21st" for the earlier or later month? In other words, do books finished on April 21 count as Month 1 or Month 2?"

Maybe a bunch of Countdown links would help?

message 30: by Mary X (last edited Mar 19, 2019 12:49PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Am I right in thinking that for #37 Read a book with 3 O's in the title, those O's have to be the first letter of non-article words? Or can the O's be anywhere?

And does Contemporary Romance count for #136? Or does it have to just be "contemporary"?

message 31: by ❀Tea❀ (last edited Mar 19, 2019 01:53PM) (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I'll let Laura do the countdowns as I don't know what time she wants :)

For O's, they can be anywhere in the title. But it has to be title, not subtitle.

It's just contemporary. But contemporary romance usually also has couple of contemporary tags, don't they?

message 32: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments The one I was looking at had several forms of contemporary but not just plain contemporary. But I found another task for it anyway.

message 36: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 319 comments It won't be automatic, the mods will have to get you a spreadsheet and add you to the main when they get a chance.

message 39: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments Even after looking at the goal FAQs google sheet I'm still confused about the task "Read a book where the ISBN10 number has exactly 6 odd numbers". The goal FAQs sheet states " numbers only, ignore any letters" (I get that, although ISBN10 should by default have only numbers), but "if no ISBN listed for the version you are reading, use GR default" and "it does need to be the version you are reading that has the ISBN" are what confuse me. I read about half of the books as kindle editions, which of course don't have an ISBN but an ASIN. Does this mean that kindle editions are not eligible for this task? What if only the ISBN-13 is listed for an ebook or paper book?

message 40: by Suzanne (new)

message 41: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments I scrolled through the goal FAQs sheet and would welcome some guidance as to what constitute spring words. I did notice the earlier question and answer about flowers. I get it that "spring" is most likely allowed, but what else?

message 42: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10095 comments Mod
I'd think things like lamb / chick / Easter (sorry Karen, but we're right way up now!) / March / April / May / green / yellow / egg / flower / birth / hatch

things around new growth & birth & vigorous life (new, too?)

message 45: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Brooklyn wrote: "Would any flower word count, such as roses?"

No; as some flowers are associated with different seasons. I wouldn't count roses as a spring word. Its not one of those flowers that bloom first.

message 49: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Rose was used in the original question and approved. Just saying.
(because orchid was also used and that was the word I wanted to use for Spring along with Zinnia.)

Thanks for the catch Mary; I missed that. Original question stands as approved

Brooklyn;
Yes to your rose question .... as Mary reminded us of the original decision. ( thanks Mary and sorry Brooklyn I missed that)
