Chapter 1:
This is what I love about Madeline Miller. You can so easily get into the story like you’ve known it forever. I’m reminded of Circe. She wasn’t anyone either. That part about his mother being stupid because she smiled was interesting.
Chapter 2:
I almost missed that the poor boy was only 9! Anyway, Odysseus was clever. I really cannot remember his wife’s name and origin from Circe. I think Helen already knew what Odysseus would say and maybe she liked the man she chose.
Chapter 3:
I did not expect that at all. Damn. Especially the death. Exile or death was expected and anticipated especially with a father like that. I feel pity for the poor sea-nymph Thetis whom Peleus deflowered/raped. I’m glad to finally know our protagonist’s name: Patroclus, but I don’t know why I assumed he’d be Achilles. So he’s telling us Peleus’s son’s story? I really feel bad for him; and those scary nightmares for a 10 year old.
Chapter 4:
This was beautiful, was it not? I am already a big fan of Achilles. Patroclus found a friend afterall.
Chapter 5:
I enjoyed Achilles’ word with his father. He was that confident only because his father dotes on him. I wonder what’s the advantage/safety in training in private. Like Patroclus, I’m curious why he chose him. The way Patroclus describes Achilles, it feels like he has a crush. Did it feel like that while reading or is it just me? Or maybe it’s because he’s the first person to show give a damn about him. Achilles is so pure.
Chapter 6:
God, it made sense. The king banished him because he confessed. I guess Patroclus himself didn’t leave him any option. Oh, they are so innocent. I didn’t like what Thetis said. That was bitter and cold. I love Achilles. It was so innocent how Patroclus only thought that he won’t lose his only friend yet. I wonder how this will end already. Will Achilles change?
Chapter 7:
Really? Do they both like each other? Or is it just Patroclus? Maybe just him. I’m so sad that he’s gone. I feel like he didn’t want to leave just yet. Silver lining: He’ll return. I hope he doesn’t change so much.
Chapter 8:
I never thought Achilles would be waiting for Patroclus too! I loved this chapter so much. Chiron was always good, though I think Thetis might intervene again. I wonder if the boys will talk about the kiss. I’d love to see Patroclus become a warrior and/or surgeon. I think he’ll be good!

Yes, I agree :)

What do you think of Patroclus's feelings about Achilles, and about Thetis? Are you enjoying the writing style? Have you read another of her books?

Yes, love the writing! I'm glad the feelings were mutual, lol. Oh yes, she is indeed. I despise her, but most 'gods' are the same.
