The most exciting event in the recent history of space science began to unfold as we observed the black hole on 10.4.2019.
A simple explanation of the project:

Hurray for international collaboration!

This image reveals the outline of the supermassive black hole M87, at the center of the Virgo A galaxy.
Topics of the month:
🌎We just saw events unfold 55 million light years away...If this was the past...Can we also see Earth's past?
🔭What if the telescopes were planted away from the Earth and looked at Earth from a distance...
Can we actually see the future?
👽 Why didn't they zoom in on suspect planets/galaxies...not a single alien in sight??
Are we alone after all?

Here are a few thoughts, I picked up from another group:
If you had a mirror on the moon (about 238K miles away), you could see about 2.5 seconds into Earth's past. If that mirror was on Pluto, you could see about 13.4 hours into Earth's past.
If you could magically be transported 27 lightyears away, or had a mirror strategically placed 13.5 lightyears away, you could see yourself being born.
Amazing if it were all true!🤔

Powehi: black hole gets a name meaning ‘the adorned fathomless dark creation’

A Hawaiian name was justified because the project included two telescopes in Hawaii, astronomers said.

What NASA says about black holes:
A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying.
Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. They are invisible

’The Paradox of Time’’, composed by the British poet Austin Dobson:
“Time goes, you say? Ah no!
Alas, Time stays, we go;
Or else, were this not so,
What need to chain the hours,
For youth were always ours?
Ours is the eye’s deceit
Of men whose flying feet
Lead through some landscape low;
We pass, and think we see
The earth’s fixed surface flee,
Alas, time stays, we go!
Once in the days of old
Your locks were curling gold,
And mine had shamed the crow.
Now, in the self-same stage,
We’ve reached the silver age,
Time goes, you say? - ah no!
Alas, time stays, we go!”

How oft hereafter will she wax and wane;

A new planet discovered:

Kepler-47 is a roughly 3.5-billion-year-old system located 3,340 light-years from Earth.
The newly announced Kepler-47d, which is about 7 times bigger than Earth.
Kepler-47b and Kepler-47c, both have two suns in their skies, just like Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine in the "Star Wars" universe.
The researchers made the discovery using the most prolific planet hunter of all time, NASA's Kepler space telescope.

Did anyone see the pink Moon?
The so-called Pink Moon is the annual Full Moon phase of the month of April on (Friday, April 19) the Full Moon will peak in brightness about eight hours before it rises above the horizon. Once the Pink Moon starts to slowly rise over the east-southeast horizon, it will be the biggest and brightest of the month.

If you look at the galaxy ESO 137-001 in visible light, you can see why it's considered an example of a "jellyfish" galaxy. Blue ribbons of young stars dangle from the galaxy's disk like cosmic tentacles.

College Students Hatch Nuclear-Powered Magnetic Plan to Protect Marsonauts from Cosmic Rays
A group of undergrad students is developing a magnetic shield to defend interplanetary astronauts from the intense cosmic radiation between Earth and Mars.
The students, from Drake University in Iowa, presented their project in the poster session Saturday (April 13) at the April meeting of the American Physical Society. Their MISSFIT (Magneto-Ionization Spacecraft Shield for Interplanetary Travel) design uses a powerful magnetic shield that, like Earth's magnetosphere, protects the planet from high-energy particles. The defense system also incorporates "passive" shielding to mimic the ionosphere — Earth's second layer of defense

🔭On Thursday (April 25) the moon will make a close approach to Saturn in the predawn sky. For lucky skywatchers in part of the globe, the moon will actually pass in front of the ringed planet.
The occultation of Saturn will be visible across the South Pacific, including eastern Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. During that time, Saturn will hide behind the moon for over an hour. In Melbourne, Australia, the planet first ducks behind the moon at 10:40 p.m., and it reappears at 11:26 p.m. local time. You can find a visibility map and a timetable for the occultation at lunar-occultations.com.
