Have any of you read a book by Ellen Hopkins before? If not, what do you think of her writing style? One of the reasons we wanted to pick this up for the month of August was because it's different from the books we usually pick. If you have read Ellen Hopkins before how is this book different than her other books?

message 2: by Zoe (new)

Zoe (retrouvaill3s) | 3 comments I've read all of Ellen Hopkins young adult books. This book is ultimately different because it doesn't have more than one perspective. A lot of her books, Glass, Fallout, Impulse, Perfect, Tricks, Identical, and Tilt all have more than 1 perspective. Also this is the first book shes written about the Christian faith, which I think is interesting. Burned, which was about the Mormon faith, is one of my favorites because its about that religion.
Im just a huge Ellen Hopkins fan and I'm SOOO glad this book was picked :)

message 3: by Darby (new)

Darby (willoxash) | 1 comments Even though I'm only 130 pages in, it's incredible so far and I'm very interested to see how things turn out, since I am a Christian myself :) can't wait to read more!

message 4: by Molly (new)

Molly (mcelizabeth97) I read Crank but I haven't read any of her other books. I'm excited to read this one, though.

message 5: by Gergana (new)

Gergana I really like the structure of the book. It looks like a novel in poems. And the theme is relatable, because I have people in my family who are very religuos, but I myself am not.

message 6: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 8 comments I have never read a book by Ellen Hopkins and I was a little weary about the way this book is written, but after a while I just stopped noticing. I am loving this book so far!

message 7: by Shea (new)

Shea (nerdyhpfan) | 2 comments Never read a book by Ellen! I am loving this one so far! Such a fast paced book! I don't think I've ever read such a big book so fast!

message 8: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Denney I have only read one other Ellen Hopkins book, her adult novel Triangles. I already like this much more. There are some similarities in that the writing is still beautiful verse and both deal with some heavier subject matter. All three narrators of Triangles were women so I'm enjoying how Hopkins writes from the male perspective and I find it really believable. Im really interested to see where things go from here!

message 9: by Kelly (new)

Kelly K (kmcrazy8) | 1 comments I have read all of Ellen Hopkins' books and if my memory serves me correctly, this is the first book that solely has male pov. It was also the first in awhile to not have more than one perspective. I find her books to be quite addicting!

message 10: by Zachary (new)

Zachary (zahastic) I haven't read any of Ellen Hopkins' books but this is amazing. The characters feel so real just by reading their conversations and thoughts on the pages. I think that is what I love so much about this book, I feel like Matthew is a real person in my community. I can personally relate to his views and doubts, I think everyone has doubted religion at least once in their lives. Anyway, I'm loving this book so far and I'm looking forward to what is still to come!

message 11: by Teguh (new)

Teguh Samudra (teguhs) I like the book a lot so far. I don't really know how to enjoy this book, since the format is free verse, and it's kinda weird when you read it like a poem. I read it like a usual novel. I feel like if you can appreciate poetry, you can get a lot more from this book.

message 12: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella In not up to page 130 yet, but close. I don't like Hayden. Something about her just doesn't sit right.

message 13: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 11 comments Interesting so far. On page 154.

Quinton (asagecalledq) | 17 comments Gabriella wrote: "In not up to page 130 yet, but close. I don't like Hayden. Something about her just doesn't sit right."

I'm with you on that

message 15: by Quinton (new)

Quinton (asagecalledq) | 17 comments I've never read a Ellen Hopkins book before and I find this one to have hooked me so far.

This book also reminds me what a mess relationships were in High School. lol

message 16: by Trina (new)

Trina (trinabetweenchapters) I haven't read anything else by Ellen Hopkins. I thought I wouldn't like the verse style, but I decided to pick it up because it's so different than what I typically read and I got really curious. So far I really like the style!

Dana (asreadbydana) (asreadbydana) | 2 comments Ellen Hopkins is one of my favorite authors. Her books are easy to read, but the writing is beautiful. I haven't read one of her books in a while, but so far Rumble is good! I'd probably find anything by Ellen good, to be honest :p

message 18: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 3 comments I have read a few Ellen Hopkins books and loved them. So far I am really enjoying Rumble as well. I love that she writes in free verse because it makes it stop hard to stop reading and how she writes about such deep subjects. It is breaking my heart to read Matt think about his dysfunctional family and how hes never seen his parents truly seem to love each other and the effect that has had on him.
Can't wait to finish reading this book!

message 19: by Angela (new)

Angela Murat | 5 comments Never read from this author before. But I am loving this by now. The style of writing is so easy to get hooked onto (the verses) and the deepness is impacting so early in the book. I'm actually reading this little by little in the bookstore XD. It's just that good that I need to finish it, and also discuss it with y'all.

message 20: by Taiya (new)

Taiya Hakes | 9 comments I've never read anything by Ellen Hopkins BUT I'm LOVING rumble!!! I'm sooooo happy I joined booksplosian other wise I would have never picked up this amazing book. It goes by SOOOOO fast!!!!!! I'm on page 160 and just got it last night!

message 21: by Keshia (new)

Keshia Barbee (kesh_dots) | 5 comments I have read about half of Ellen Hopkin's books and I LOVE them because they are so real and gritty. They really attack hard hitting issues straight on and don't shy away from the gory details. Burned and Identical are my favorites. I read Tricks earlier this week for my personal book club and would definitely recommend it! however, it may be one of the more graphic books she has so beware!

message 22: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (ahalfbloodfangirl) | 5 comments My daughter introduced me to Ellen Hopkins. I was always a bit reluctant to read her because of her format. But, I've enjoyed the books I've read so far. She writes with a rawness and realness to her characters that, IMO, is rare. The subject matter of this one has me hooked. I'm on 158.

I too I don't really like Hayden. Maybe her character will change as the story progresses but she seems a little self-absorbed.

Celine The Bookish Queen (celinethequeen) | 1 comments I have read a lot of Ellen Hopkins' books (Crank,Impulse,Perfect,Identical,Burned and Smoke) and usually fly through them. However, Rumble is taking more time for me to read. I don't have enough free time right now to just sit down and read it, like I do with most of her books. Instead, I can only read on the weekends which makes it hard to get into that reading mood.

Content-wise I am really enjoying it. Some of Hopkins' books do talk about God (Impulse,Burned and Smoke) but this is the first one where it's the main focus. I am a Christian so I'm finding the relationship between Hayden and Matthew very interesting. I have no issues with being friends with Atheists but to date one and fall in love with them sounds like a bad idea to me. I think a lot of Christian girls do this because 1) they think they can "fix" the person and 2) to rebel against their parents. I'm excited to see how their relationship works out.

One issue I'm having is separating Matthew from some of Hopkins' other characters. For whatever reason I am picturing Tony from Impulse a lot. And that's not really okay since Matthew and Tony have a few big differences between them, so I should be confusing them with each other. They should have distinct voices.

message 24: by Jbb Lim (new)

Jbb Lim (jbblkh) I have never heard of Ellen Hopkins before and this is my very first. Losing someone is what I've experienced in my life and she has never failed to move me to tears every time Luke is being brought up. The emotional struggle from each and every individual is so real, so raw... Thank you for choosing this book!

message 25: by Miss Diana (new)

Miss Diana This is my first Ellen Hopkins novel, and so far I really appreciate her descriptive word choice and language. I also like the format of the novel as a whole - the lines and stanzas are broken up just right to complement what's going on in the story.

In regards to the characters, Matthew comes across as very real and I do feel sympathy towards him. With Hayden, although some readers have expressed a bit of mistrust/wariness towards her, I'd have to say I feel sorry for her. It seems like Matthew needs more emotional/psychological support than one person would be able to offer, and for him to turn to her for most of that support is a hard burden for anyone to handle - even if it is something that's mostly unspoken between them or sought out through distractions. I think the strain of it is getting to her in its own way. I do look forward to seeing the growth and development of these characters and their situations.

message 26: by Ranada (new)

Ranada Givens (southernbookwrym) | 8 comments I love Ellen Hopkins and her writing style, and so far this book is amazing. This book is different because she onlh ises one P.O.

BreAnna (Bre'sBooks) (bresbooks) This is my first Ellen Hopkins book. I am really liking the writing style, but not thrilled altogether with the content so far. I figured it would be sad and have darker themes which I don't normally enjoy, but the language also is a bit of a distracter for me. I am hopeful though as the book progresses that I will adjust and increasingly enjoy the rest of the story. Rumble is definitely nothing like anything I've read before, which I believe will be good for me in the long run.

message 28: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (mannafromheaven) | 1 comments This is my first book of Ellen Hopkins, and when I first noticed the writing style I was apprehensive, but I have learned that a lighter hearted style (like the written verse) and the very serious subject make a nice mix to make it a quick(er) read

message 29: by Fien (new)

Fien (touchedbythepage) | 11 comments It is my first Ellen Hopkins book and just like some of you expressed, I was wary about the writing style too. It took me a while to get into it (and realise that the "title" was the beginning of the sentence). It had me confused for a while haha but I'm liking it so far.

It's a quick read and I like the dark theme of this book. The image from the last bit, made me sad and feel sorry for Matthew to be haunted with it. I wish he didn't have to go through that. At the same time, reading about Luke is equally depressing.

Liking it so far!

Indy | 2 comments Poop! I just got the book! Hoping to read it quick!!!

message 31: by Breanna (new)

Breanna Allen | 4 comments This is my first Ellen Hopkins book, and I have to say, it's definitely different than most books I read. I don't really get way it's written in verse form, though. I don't mind it at all, but it does seem a bit unnecessary. So far I'm really into this book, and I can't wait to finish it!

message 32: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (arielbissett) I've never read Ellen Hopkins and I think the biggest distinction for me is the obvious free verse.. I'm not loving it! I'm really enjoying the story and themes, but I'm finding the writing style more distracting than anything!

message 33: by Mom2triplets04 (new)

Mom2triplets04 | 40 comments Finally managed to get to page 130. This is my first read of Ellen Hopkins even though I do own one of her other books. I am finding it to be a bit confusing because I only have little bits of time to read each day as my school schedule is taking up a lot of my time. Need like an hour to dive in. Will continue reading.

message 34: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (xjustmichelle) | 4 comments This is my first Ellen Hopkins book. I've never read a book in this writing style before but I really like it. I've been flying through it. I just started in the morning and have barely had any time to read but somehow I'm already up to page 130. I can't wait to continue reading and see what else happens.

message 35: by Kassey (new)

Kassey (kclynne) | 18 comments The writting style actually makes the book go faster. At first I thought it was going to bother me but I hardly notice it now.

message 36: by Shauna (new)

Shauna (slytherkitty) | 5 comments I've read most of Ellen Hopkins's books, so I'm used to her style of writing. I personally love it and feel like I go through it way faster than the usual type of book.

I'm not sure how I'm feeling so far about this one in particular. The main character seems pretty relatable, but I feel like I'm not getting very into any of the character's personalities yet. Although I already don't like Hayden.
