Ryan Naughton | 4 comments So what would you guys consider to be classic mixes of action, and cyberpunk storytelling? The ones that spring to my mind are Snow Crash, Altered Carbon, The Stars My Destination, Count Zero, Nexus and the Song Called Youth trilogy.

Your choices?

Pygmy Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence - After the Long Goodbye by Masaki Yamada

It's a novel based on the Ghost in the Shell anime movies/series, but I don't think you need to have watched all of it to understand the book. It might help if you had at least watched the movie (that's all I've seen, years ago) but the cyborg featured here played a smaller role. This book has action, but it's not the heart-thumping adrenaline variety. As another reviewer on this site puts it, it's "as being a slow burning jazz song infused with an extended action sequence.

This story is essentially three different stories. On one hand, it's an action thriller with yakuza, armored car chase scenes and explosions. On the other hand, it's an existential story of a cyborg and his own personal levels of humanity. As a third story-- one can say it's just a simple story of a man searching for his dog. "

I highly recommend it~

Pygmy AlterWorld (Play to Live, #1) by D. Rus

There's also this one, written by a Russian guy. I hadn't expected much because I had gotten the ebook for free at bookbub, but it ended up being an engrossing RPGlit story. Haha, I didn't even know RPGlit was a genre, but once I started reading it, I recognized it from similar Japanese light novels/anime series that I've read. I don't know if it counts as cyberpunk...maybe not, but it's about this guy who deliberately loses himself into an MMORPG since he's dying in real life, and how he goes about building a new "life" in that fantasy videogame world. The fighting that takes place is pretty exciting, but is fashioned after videogame commands, so...it's different. :P

Hell yeah. The Ghost In The Shell franchise is fantastic. I'm partial to the Stand Alone Complex version. Politics, espionage and terrorism with a few good men and one very good woman doing what is necessary in a broken world.

For those who enjoyed Ready Player One (which I did), Ernest Cline's next novel is out now Armada Armada by Ernest Cline . I can't wait to read it!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Lisa. I just downloaded it as an audio book from the library. One of my friends listened to it & said Wheaton did a great job on it like he did on Player One. I can't wait either, although I'm really liking the Perry novel I'm listening to Pursuit.
