I'm on the fence about this book. I haven't picked up a copy yet to read even though the blurb and comments talk about what a wonderful classic it is. I'm just not sure. Tell me what you think about this one so I'll better know which way to fall on this one. :)

I'm about 80% through and digging it. It's not much on complex characters or pulse pounding action, but it's gripping in a way that the strange mystery of a world is unraveled and slowly revealed.
Interesting. So, this one is more about world building than characterization and Plot? I love a well built world ...

Finished a short time ago. This is the type of science fiction I like most. I was tempted to give it five stars - just because - but I think it lacks the near perfection needed for that ranking. I have a few technical questions - which would be spoilers - so I'll hold back a few days until more have read the book.

I thought the afterward was very interesting, particularly in its comparison of post-WWII British and American SF writing.
P.S.

:)

It's thought provoking and does include some social commentary too - I won't elaborate in case I reveal too much - but as I say, my thoughts about it are mixed.

The world is just so well built. I found the pace was perfect and I loved to discover about the world at the same time as Helward. It's certainly very original and thought-provoking.
I would have preferred if the characters' relationship was a bit more elaborated (not sure I really appreciate Helward's ways with women for instance) but that's it.
My beef (at the end) is that I don't think the science rang true. I like the fact it was all supposed to be perception caused by energy distortion. But does physical time slow down or speed up depending on the direction someone travels on the track?
