Jenna | Bookmark Your Thoughts (bookmarkyourthoughts) | 2 comments Hello!

Thank you for the explanation. I have a few questions though. On the homepage, there's a challenge thing where you can indicate the amount of books you want read. Is this for all three readathon challenge dates set (i.e. May to July)?

The second is I noticed you put a prompt of "banned books" for May. Do all the books you want to read have to follow under the prompt/challenge?

I'm probably over thinking this ... but oh well ha-ha!

Thanks again!

Feli (felifirefly) The challenge on the homepage is for every individual group member. You can set your goal there and add a bookshelf. GR will track your progress then.
This tool is used a lot in my other groups, mostly those are challenged for a whole year.
I guess the mods can set a start- and ending date. So right now it would track every book you add to the linked bookshelf from now till end of July. This would be 3 months. So your challenge could look like 'I want to read 2 books for every month's readathon' or something like that.
Most groups also link a discount thread to every challenge thus we can talk about our progress etc.

Maybe a challenge for every month isn't that's interesting because it won't be too many books for a weekend. But a 3,6 or 12 month challenges could be interesting. At least, it always keeps me motivated :)

I hope this was understandable. Please excuse my English, I know it's not perfect 😅

Also: what are you planning on readings for May? I honestly don't know many 'banned books'. I heard about some books being banned or that were banned (?) in the US in schools etc.. but I am not sure.. over here, books aren't banned (anymore). Very few were put on the index but aren't yet anymore. This isn't really a thing in Germany so I wonder which books are banned around the world :)

Feli (felifirefly) You're welcome, Tamara. Glad my little bit of knowledge helped :)

Thanks for the list! This is very interesting. So many classics on that list...

I agree. I do not believe in banning books. Frankly once a kid gets to high school, I don’t think the parents should be able to ban any books or even request an alternate book. Teens are on their way to becoming young adults. They need to face some uncomfortable situations. This will show them the proper way to react (or not react). People are going to have different opinions in life. It’s okay to not agree and it’s okay to still be kind about it. Also if a teen is in public high school, they have most certainly heard all the words and been confronted with a variety of situations. And if they’ve been living under a rock, then it’s about time.

Holly (goldikova) What a great challenge. Right now I have twenty one physical books sitting on a shelf in my room that I haven't read yet. So I linked that shelf as my challenge. This will be a fine motivator to finally read them.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Hello all, happy to be here. Read-a-thons are fun! This weekend will be a bit busy for me but will check in and read when I can.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) @ ✨Tamara and/or @ jb -- Should we create an individual thread in the group somewhere to track how many hours/books read, etc?

So many books on this list I've already read!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

So we do we have to stick to the theme? I checked the banned books list and only found a couple on my read bookshelf I have and none on my to-read bookshelf.

message 14: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
No you do not have to stick to the theme during the readathon. It’s only a suggested theme, and the goal really is to just have fun and read.

Ok thank you for your help :)

For the homepage challenge would I link my to-read owned shelf or my currently-reading or read shelf?

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) Jamie wrote: "For the homepage challenge would I link my to-read owned shelf or my currently-reading or read shelf? ."

Hi, Jamie. I'm not a mod, but the way it works in other groups I'm in is that you create a shelf specific to the challenge. So, for example, you might set a goal of reading 4 books during the May 24B4Monday readathon. If you set up a shelf on your bookshelves called "May 24B4Mon read" or something similar and put the books you've read during the readathon on that shelf, the widget will keep track of your progress for you. So, for example, after you put one book on your "May 24B4Mon read" shelf, you'll see your progress bar move to 1/4 of the way done.

@Kristina Simon Ok thank you so much!

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
Yep Kristina is right. You can make a specific shelf for your monthly readathon if you wish. Thanks for answering Kristina!

Jjean (httpswwwgoodreadscomjjean) Thank you for the invite and this does sound like fun... will get everything set up later today....

message 21: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Clark I don't know how much reading I will actually get to do during any of these readathons, as I work Sundays and every other Saturday plus overtime, but I will try! When is this months, this upcoming Thursday to Sunday or next, and do we set our own threads up, or will the mods, or will there be one big group thread?

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

@Jenny I'm not a mod but I'm almost positive the readathon is the 24th to 26th this month with the optional theme of banned books. One of the mods posted a link of banned books if you are interested in checking it out also.

message 23: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
Janie is correct. The readathon is this weekend. Feel free to read at your own pace. This is about reading and having fun. Banned books is the theme, but it is not mandatory.

message 24: by Ashley (new)

Ashley ❣️ | 14 comments Wow theirs so many banned books from this theme that I would like to read but I don’t own any of them :( I’m sad lol. I will defiantly still be participating but not hoping to read much as it is the weekend before I graduate high school so lots of cleaning and getting things together this weekend! I’ll deff read as much as I can though!

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Clark I'm off only thursday for this readathon... I'm taking my book to work and read on break though, so I'll have some time in! I'll be working on War and Peace and No Way, a sci fi along the lines of The Martian.

Mine's not updating :/ I posted the link for the 24B4 Monday Readathon shelf I created in the shelf name spot. I finished a book and moved it to that shelf and nothing. Did I do it right?

message 27: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
Jamie - I see one book on that shelf for you. Is that what you were asking? I do apologize that it took me so long to respond (mishap with fiance’s keys - ugh). Are you saying it’s not tracking the book on your shelf for the GR progress above?

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, it added the books to the shelf ok but didn't track it on the homepage tracker for the group.

message 29: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
Hmmm I’ll have to check into that. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t. I’ll give it a look when I get home.

message 30: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
Jamie - it did work for me. Go to the review page. Try updating the shelves drop down. Then refresh the home page and it should appear as updated. I wish the home page had a place to update books read as that would be helpful. If that doesn’t work, let me know and maybe we can contact support to see what the issue is.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

@jb I finally got it to work! I was pasting the link for the shelf and tried just putting the shelf name and it worked. Thanks for all your help!

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
Oh good! I’m so glad you got it to work. Yay!

I really wish Amazon would spend some time working on the GR app. It could really be much more user friendly.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I definitely wish the app was more user friendly. I have to edit comments, strike books, tag people, enter giveaways etc and even view the challenge on Goodreads mobile website and change it to desktop view.

We’re halfway through June and getting closer to our end of month readathon. I’m already thinking about what’ll be on my list (when I should be focusing on what I’m reading now).

message 35: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) I participate in a three day readathon at the start of each season. Usually we track page counts and my individual goal is to read roughly 1000 pages from Friday (00:01) to Sunday(23:59). I have learned that dense books with difficult sentence structures are not helpful for attaining my goals, so if I really want to feel good about completing I need to put aside a couple of page turners,

Is this the correct thread for me to be adding my challenge into?

message 36: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 227 comments Mod
I can understand that fully. It seems a bigger and denser book will always slow down my reading especially if I’m tracking books or page counts.

I’ve opened up the June readathon thread for setting our end of month reading goals in case anyone wanted to start planning a bit ahead of time.
