This review says how I feel better than I could say: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
"This is a book about social anxiety...written in the most insensitive way EVER. It's a joke. The entire book is a joke." That's how I saw this book too unfortunately.
I know Audrey is only supposed to be ~14 so it felt younger than the books I usually read and that showed through. Maybe a younger audience would appreciate this more!
Overall I gave it 2/5 stars.

Finding Audrey is one of those completely forgettable books. You read it, you have fun (or you don’t) and then you never think of it again.
I did enjoy some parts of it - mostly the family dynamics and comedy; it had potential but delivered kind of flat. One thing I’m grateful for is that ‘Audrey’ made the decision to not reveal what happened to her and stuck to it throughout the book. No one has to explain their trauma. While thumbs up for that, some of the other mental health related topics made my skin crawl. Like the complete disregard of other characters’ mental struggles, evident in that meeting with Izzy. She’s far from the victim here and Audrey was right to leave (since it was all the parents’ hoax), BUT disregarding depression is never a good call. Especially if we’re talking about a book that focuses on the mental health.
That sums it up!

I agree that it was a forgettable book. I also agree I'm glad they didn't reveal what happened to her - thats totally ok by me!
I'm no expert on mental health but the way they handled some things, yeah, it didn't feel right to me at all... but then again, I suppose thats life and things aren't always perfect either!

I agree that the book did feel younger. There were some parts that I, as a mental health professional, didn’t agree with and rubbed me the wrong way. I did appreciate how the therapist was portrayed (mostly) and Audrey’s film project was pretty cool. Overall, the book was okay. Didn’t love it but didn’t hate it.

I agree that it was somewhat forgettable. I read a ton of mental health centered books this month for the celebration of mental health month, and I liked those books better than this one.
The comedy was good if you’re familiar with the way it’s delivered and it did remind me of some British shows that I’ve liked.
I like what you said about trauma—I feel like trauma isn’t discussed enough and so many things can be traumatic for so many different kinds of people. And it, nor it’s effects, should be discarded.
