A Spark of Light discussion

“Obviously, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t have any cramping or bleeding in the next few days,” the doctor added, “but given the strength of that heartbeat, I’d say that little guy—or girl—is planning on sticking around. Definitely takes after its mama.” (Page 23 of iBook)

“The GPS on her phone told her that in two miles, she would be turning right. She put on her signal, following the directions carefully because she was not familiar with the roads in Jackson, Mississippi. But even with her detour to the nursery, Izzy knew she would be fine. Did Izzy back out of her abortion at the last minute, or am I missing something?

This was one of the twists of the book. Izzy's reasons for being at the clinic were not stated in the earlier pages/later hours of the book, and I thought she was there to work as a nurse. When staff at the clinic did not initially know her name, I figured she was newly assigned.

When we discover that she was going to the clinic with the intention of having an abortion, that reveals that she ultimately changes her mind. I don't think her reasons are spelled out, but in part it might have been that her experience in the clinic reaffirmed her sense of self-worth--because of her, Becks and the doctor lived. She'd been thinking her background of poverty somehow made her relationship doomed.... She was going to have an abortion, break off her engagement, and have whichever life she assumed she was fated to have.
