Not a contender at all, IMO. It's straight up commercial fantasy, and not a very good one.

Anne Bennett (headfullofbooks) | 81 comments I have this one on hold but think I will ski it. It is the first book in a series and I doubt the committee will give it a second glance based on that.

Karyn Silverman (infowitch) | 7 comments It’s just really purple — overwritten, although luscious descriptions! But not in any way a contender for an award that looks at literary merit.

Katie Slott | 2 comments This is the first Chokshi book I have not enjoyed. In every way - plotting, characters, style, setting - it was either over-the-top or too blah.

Maureen (mhsquier) | 79 comments This book has an intricate fantasy plot, but not one that I would call extraordinary. The characters are diverse and represent many under represented groups, but they are also well developed, except for Tristan, who ends up being the most impactful character.

But I don’t think those strengths outweigh the weaknesses. The author seems to favor short sentences. And many dependent clauses. With no obvious plot connection. And several plot devices are just dropped in with no previous mention, like the mnemo ear - it just magically appears, and oh by the way is exactly what the character needs at that moment.

Fantasy is under represented in the Printz canon, but I don’t think this title will change that.
