Zoe (zoemmaude) | 37 comments Is anyone going to attempt the Goodreads Summer Reading Challenge!? Anywhere that you can get crossovers with the BR list!?

So many challenges, so little time!

I bet there's quite a bit of crossover--do we need a new thread to garner suggestions?

Sami If you find one I would love to see it :)

Mya R | 279 comments The Goodreads summer challenge to read a debut novel could double-dip with the Read Harder challenge for books with fewer than 100 reviews &/or a self-published book.

Mya R | 279 comments And for the summer challenge for "Armchair Traveler" one could pick an #ownvoices work set in either Oceania or Mexico, which are two of the Read Harder tasks.

Mya R | 279 comments Sour Heart by Jenny Zhang won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, making it fit the new voices/debut fiction section of the Goodreads Summer Reading challenge, & task #3 of the Read Harder challenge: A book by a woman and/or AOC (Author of Color) that won a literary award in 2018.

Zoe (zoemmaude) | 37 comments I've found quite a few!

For the 'Genre You've Never Read Before' I'm reading Sailor Moon, Vol. 1 which is for the Manga challenge on Read Harder, and also covers Asia for Continental drift.

The Color Purple for 'Read a book with a number or color in the title' is my pick for 'A historical romance by an AOC' (although the 'Primary' part annoys me because Purple is not a Primary Colour!) Also covers North America for Continental drift.

For 'An #ownvoices book set in Oceania' I chose Carpentaria which is both Australasia/Oceania for Continental Drift and 'Read a book set in a different culture from your own' - most of these should work for you unless that's the culture you're from!

The Martian is an epistolary novel and was recommended to me by a friend.

An American Princess: The Many Lives of Allene Tew is a translated book so good for the summer challenge and the translated book written by and/or translated by a woman for RH. This was one of the free Kindle books being given out for world book day. Also ticks off Europe for me.

The Color Purple is many things, but it most definitely is not a romance.

The Color Purple is not romance. Kindred is not romance. I recommend checking out Silvia Moreno-Garcia's twitter feed from January for some good rants on white people trying to shoehorn the few black writers they know into the category of "romance".

Here is a website (also courtesy of Moreno-Garcia's twitter) that is entirely dedicated to romances by writers of color. You can pick your category, including "historical".

I usually follow the Goodreads categorizations that appear for each book when I use the app on my phone as a guide.

Karin (8littlepaws) | 119 comments For historical romance by a writer of color, IMO you can't go wrong with Beverly Jenkins! She does have a book named Indigo which would fit historical romance by AOC for readharder and the color title for summer challenge.

I have zero idea what constitutes romance since it's not a genre I read nor is it a book I know anything about...was going along with the 92 people who shelved it as such...

This post is great! Thanks for these recommendations. Just got myself Carpentaria.

For a translated book / short & sweet from the summer challenge I picked Convenience Store Woman originally written in Japanese by Sayaka Muraka and translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori (two women).
