Lets talk! Ask questions, suggestions, or whatever else comes to mind, relating to this group or series'.

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments Ello. Saw this just in time for bed lol

So I'll kick this off- what are the best ways to tell if a series is finished being published. Some are easy to tell in the synopsis or when it says complete. I used to assume finished if it has been a few years but how long should I give? Look at how long Stephen King or George RR Martin can take to put out a sequel! And I don't want to look to in depth at the latest release in case of spoilers. So do you have any good ways or sites you use to learn if a book is finished. Like for manga I can use myanimelist and it tells my if it is in publishing or finished. Great thing to know.

Hi hi! Bed already?

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments Well some books will specifically say things like trilogy or Duology so that can be a hint

That does. Although I've lost count the number of "trilogies" that come out the suddenly have a 4th or 5th book. It is amusing and frustrating. But yes when it states that if often helps for those.

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments I’m don’t actually have any other visual hints. O.o

I hate when authors do that! I feel so good when I finish a series and then they ruin it by adding more. So I'm on the fence on whether I should read Restore Me (Shatter Me, #4) by Tahereh Mafi Restore Me or not. I have heard that it isn't worth the read.

message 9: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments Sometimes an author's blog or website might have information about how long a series is, if it is finished, etc. I follow Leigh Bardugo on Insta and she's pretty good about keeping her readers updated there and on her website/in news letters.

It is especially annoying years later, as in this case. You think it is done, mark it as such and then 5+ years later sudden sequel. I feel conflicted to pick it up, especially as that often means me having to re-read the others after the long gap.

Oh no! Do you know the source of the frustration, or is it general?

message 13: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments I mostly know it. I accidentally added several books. Like 100 that I don't own and I'm frustrated that some of my books aren't able to be labelled under the right format.

I wish we had a mass way to remove the 'owned' books. :(

Oooh, I hate when I do that. It doesn't make sense that's not part of the Batch Edit option.

This is why I just made a shelf for books I own vs clicking their checkbox. It isn't perfect but it is a lot easier to edit.

I have 2 for books on my kindle and then another for physical books.

message 17: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments I have that as well but since I often move books around it's easier to see the little check box.

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments I think I'm just in a bad mood in general right now. My anxiety is getting to me. I might go to bed soon.

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments Thanks. I'm doing a bit of shelf maintenance right now and listening to the Prince of Egypt soundtrack. I have to wait till full dark to sleep or I might have to get up with puppy. Soon though. It's like 1/2 hour away from full dark. Might start to get ready.

I have that soundtrack :) I assume Ruby wakes you up at dawn if you are going to bed at dark?

Yup. Before dawn actually. Like between 4-6 am. I don't mind the 6 am but the 4 really puts me in a sour mood. I am considering putting in black out drapes in her room.

Our dog likes to get up shortly after sunrise. The change to summer always takes awhile to get him to let us sleep another hour.

Sans | 722 comments Just one day in this group and I'm already happy. I love creating lists and stuff and this is giving me the opportunity to do so on a big scale. So much fun! And I have so many more things to add, but it's really hard to type while laying down. 😅

I am glad you are happy here. I am a big list maker too although I can sometimes be a little OCD about them. I hope your recovery is still going well.

Sans | 722 comments Now that I've gotten all my books up here (good lord, I have soooo many series to get through), the hardest part is deciding what to read next.

Sans wrote: "Now that I've gotten all my books up here (good lord, I have soooo many series to get through), the hardest part is deciding what to read next."

My goal is going to be a combination of what I have easiest access to (own or at the library) crossed with with what I either have been working on the longest or which I am closer to finishing.
But I am a major mood reader so that could go out the door....

message 28: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 2554 comments Mod
Hmmm, should we do some kind of series "pick-it" in this group. Like whoever signs up will be given another member's in progress list and will pick a series for the other person. That person then tries to read at least one book from that series by the end of the next month.

message 29: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments The mood reading is a huge obstacle for me. I tried using a random number generator but never stuck with it. I think if someone else picked something for me to read, especially someone here who knows what we're trying to do, I'd be more likely to do so. Instead of, y'know, hemming and hawing all day trying to decide what my ~mood~ is.

I am thinking of something like they'd like 2 series' for the other person but there has to be difference between them. Like different genres, age group (MG, YA, Adult), page/series length (if you pick something long, pick something short). Then the other person can read 1 of them. This way they aren't stuck with just the one if it doesn't work or sound interesting in the moment.

message 31: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments Sounds great! I like that there's still choice, even though someone else is picking a direction, so to speak.

Jamie | 2554 comments Mod
Also do we want to do any kind of book of the month (reading book 1 of a particular series) or a series readalong in this group?

message 33: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 2554 comments Mod
Or if anyone has some other ideas, let me know. Looking for some low-key ideas that are easy to participate in.

message 34: by Sans (last edited Jun 12, 2019 10:27PM) (new)

Sans | 722 comments I'm not sure I can be relied on for a group read, but small challenges like "read the next book in a series you started" or "read book 1 of a series you've had on your TBR for at least 2 years" would work maybe?

Or a month where we pick something off our on hold lists to start again. That'd could shake things up a bit.

If we did a group read I wouldn't always participate either most likely. A lot would depend what the book is and what my mood and interest in it was.

Hmmm but now I am getting ideas of maybe a bonus to the monthly reading to earn extra points...

message 36: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 2554 comments Mod
But I also know a lot of groups to monthly reads as is so I wasn't going to originally but I wanted to offer it up in case that is something people want.

message 37: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Boutet I am getting very frustrated with posting to this group. The posts I have made to my "in progress" and "finished" topics are not being saved by Goodreads! When I look at them from the topics pages they show that I have "entered" information - but NONE of the posts I have made in the last 2 days are there. (I do not have that problem with the DNF or On Hold - yet.) Can you tell me what to do about this? I am nowhere done posting and I don't want to post more until this is fixed. Help!

message 38: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments Hi Momokaachan,
That's strange, because I've seen the "new post" alerts on your topics. Your in progress shows me posts you've made as recently as 50ish minuets ago and your finished topic was updated 15 minutes ago. Have you tried refreshing the pages and clearing your browser's cache?

message 39: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 2554 comments Mod
same here I am seeing new progress posts from you? Is it not showing any of them for you?

message 40: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments I left a couple comments on the in progress topic as well, maybe that'll kick the refresh into action?

Marianne Boutet Jamie wrote: "same here I am seeing new progress posts from you? Is it not showing any of them for you?"

On the topics "in progress" and " crossing the finish line" none from yesterday or today, and from "dnf" and "waiting for" none from today. I have been doing anything I can think of, clearing caches, rebooting, etc, and nothing. It is pretty discouraging to see two hours' work disappear - sometimes more than once. If this means I have to start from scratch - that was a LOT of work and I am not certain it is worth my while to have to keep repeating myself.

Are you seeing sans’ replies on you thread? I had a similar issue before it was a weird glitch that took took a few days to fix. At worst take a break and just let things be for a few days. See if other places are having issues.

I just clicked though members for comments and see all your Mercedes Lackey's as most recent adds. Is that correct? Does it show those there for you?

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments Mercedes Lackey Valdemar: Vows and Honor

The Oathbound
Oathbreakers
Oathblood

overall: ***+

Here is why it is so complicated to delve into the Valdemar world: When I read these I had no idea they were connected to the Heralds' world. But they are, taking place BEFORE the Heralds trilogy; AND a fourth book, By the Sword, takes place at the same time (more or less) as the Heralds trilogy, and deals with Kerowyn, who is the grand-daughter of Kethry in Vows and Honor.

This is the last book post I see of yours. So it's there but for some reason you can't see it. That's discouraging.

I myself had a mini episode earlier creating the monthly challenge post. My follow-up comment didn't update. I had to refresh it 3 times over about 10 minutes. And that was just 1 post. So if you still can't see anything just try giving it the weekend and then see what it looks like. I am sorry. I wish I could say I knew what is up. I promise no one is messing with or deleting comments. I am not sure how many books you've added the past 2 days so I can't tell if I am seeing them all but I do see a lot. So it is there somewhere I think.

message 49: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 988 comments Huh. I sometimes get like an error message but I don't think I have ever had disappearing posts.

That would be discouraging. I feel bad that I don't have better answers. But I hope you don't give up on us just yet. Going to go comment on your Progress thread. Let me know if you see it. And what is the last comment you made that you see please.
